Thinking of Switcihing Insulin from Canisulin

I don't believe Canisulin is working for my fur baby. As you can see by his preshots he is still extremely high. I was unable to do the planned curve on him this weekend past. But Im not sure a curve would do anything. He just seems to be going higher and higher. He loves raw meat so I feed him whatever Im cooking...could raw hamburger have an effect? Im thinking at this point switching insulin would be the best idea. Thoughts?

Canisulin hits very hard early and wears off before the 12 hours are up and it's time for the next shot. Which is one of the reasons it's not a favorite here. Better choices would be Lantus, Levemir which are both human insulins or ProZinc, BCP PZI which is a cat only insulin.

I just talked to my vet and he said to up the dose to 3.5 units (We are at 2.5 right now). When I mentioned Levemir he said he would have to read up on it and get back to me as he's never heard of it. Canisulin is the only insulin they have.

Levemir is a human insulin. You get it a a pharmacy.
the 1/18 intery is the only one that has a BGs between shots. Tat day you showed a good drop on 2 units. 484 to 261 at +6. I would expect Caninsulin to peek before 6 hours. I would like to see _5. +6 at the current 2 1/2 units before increasing to 3 or more

My cat didn't do better until he came off the caninsulin. I had to really encourage my vet to switch remi to lantus but it was worth it when I began to see much better blood glucose control over much longer periods.

Can you send your vet an email with this report attached. Or print it off and drop it over to him

I would be wary of increasing the dose until you get some mid cycle readings and you don't know if the current dose is dropping him low and then he bounces back up again. Will you be getting data at the weekend on his current dose ? You can then use to ask for the change in insulin perhaps.

Marcy, I see that you and your extra sweet kitty Oyster live in Canada.

No prescription is required in Canada for either Lantus or levimir. Just go to your local drug store/pharmacy/chemist and pick some up. You may want to shop around for the best price and we suggest you get the pens/cartridges (like a min 3ml vial) and use U100 insuliin syringes to withdraw the insulin from the pen/cartridge.

Lucky you! People here in the USA need prescriptions for the Lantus and Levimir insulins and they are 2-2.5 times as expensive as in Canada.

Does Oyster ever start really looking for food before the +5? I'd suggest testing at +3 as well to give the broadest scope for catching Oyster's nadir. (The manufacturer gives +3 as the start of the period of peak effect for the amorphous part of the Caninsulin formulation.)

I will print it off and give it to him for sure. Im going to get some mid cycle readings this weekend . Im never home til 6pm so by that time the mid cycle is gone but on the weekends its a little more relaxed

Yep we live in good ole freezing top of Alberta! I will do a few more curves to confirm Canisulin is bouncing him to much as per my vet. Since we only have one vet office I really want him to be on board when I switch. I was tots surprised there was no prescription needed...I mean its a drug but I guess that's points in my favor!

Oyster is always looking for food. Anytime Im in the kitchen he's in the kitchen and if there is raw meat involved he goes crazy with the meowing til I give him some...last night I had cordon blue and Even when cooked he begged for a piece...he wont eat the crust but if I break up the chicken he could eat forever I think....what a hound cat.
