? Theodore bouncy 2/27 + UREA Question

Hello,

We managed to strap on a freestyle device onto Theodore at the vet when he was going in to see how the benzapril was working, it didn't last long and came with complications.

The blood results came back checking his kidney health, unfortunately I don't have a copy, I forgot to ask her to send it but UREA was 14.5 and his previous UREA was as high as 14.9 (sept ‘23) but did lower come January. He was dehydrated in September when he was high otherwise it floats around 12.3-12.4 for the last few years. Creatinine was normal as well as IDEXX SDMA. He was due for a poop Saturday and had an enema 2/20 which I did not have subq fluids to provide for dehydration. I did find using a freestyle tough for him as he is such gentleman he refused to use the box with a onesie so when I realized this I was removing it the days I knew he was due, overall he hated the thing.

My question is could it be causing kidney damage and being hidden because his creatinine was low last time and you can see over time was lowering... We did switch him over to young again but it's still being "mixed in" with dr. elsleys. he's on a quarter of a tablet im just terrified it might cause irreversible damage. He also did have diarrhea today which is very odd for Theodore given he has megacolon. I did however start switching him over to young again…

My other question is because he was so low this weekend I lowered his dose from 4 units to 3.5 but it's been high on and off although lower at AMPS and PMPS, am I doing something wrong? I know I haven't given it enough time just seems odd it's lower prior to shot.

Next steps: Vet said to book in 3 weeks time for bloodwork recheck. I might do full cbc to see if anemia is resolving. I’m just worried if benzapril will cause more damage than good

I also ordered a blood pressure machine off amazon and got artificial donuts

What dose of benazapril is he getting?

What is the "it" you are referring to?

You should be able to get them to email you a PDF of the blood work results. That's what I do each time. His hematocrit (HCT) was really low last time as were his other red blood cell numbers. Did you not get them tested this time? Was a urinalysis done?

When following SLGS, reductions are by 0.25 units at a time, not 0.5 units. He is however, still bouncing from the lows on the 25th. Hopefully he'll ditch that bounce sometime tomorrow.

he’s on 5mg pills, quarter of a tablet twice a day. The “it” I was referring to was the benza causing irreversible kidney damage. I don’t know how likely that is.
Anemia she is checking for in 3 weeks, he was just tested back on February 1 at the internal medicine specialist so it was suggested to me to retest in 3-4 weeks time. No urinalysis was done this time, what would this be looking for so I know to request it. She did say in 4 weeks they will also need urine sample to check protein to creatinine ratio.

Great results! His creatinine is low end of normal range. SDMA is also good.

You might find it useful to enter his data on the labs tab of the spreadsheet. I find it's a great way to spot trends. Even my non diabetics have a labs spreadsheet.

I will do that. Yes it's' definitely helpful. I was just going through old emails and checking results. I was just worried about 107 as it was trending down now it's up. Vet emailed me saying just to wait another 3 weeks and we will re-test again to make sure as well as protein creatinine check

Sounds like the vet has a solid plan. Paws crossed for good results at the next check point.
