Hi Libia. Welcome
I think you'll get good results using Lantus. But it does take patience, and lots of it.
Keep posting with your test results and let us know how Teofilo is doing daily with the 5 Ps of Playing, Purring, Preening, Pooping, Peeing (that's part of what we call the WCR or Whole Cat Report, as a cat is more than just numbers )
I hope to see you around.

Hello, Whatever I can say is that up to this moment Lantus has not shown any good resoult for my poor cat. It's the third day today. Every morning it's been even higher then the morning before. Today 401 and I couldn't find my vet, but I've sent her by mail. Now it's a little lower 343. I'm convinced that just one dose of 1 UI in 24 hours is not for him. I hope she agrees and change her method before it's too late.
Regarding the WCR, I can tell you that Teofilo, does not play anymore, he seems to be another cat. He loved coming to my bed,loved sleeping there and loved his paper balls. He also loved to play with Juanita , my female cat. Preening is good, he takes care of himself ,mainly after his meals. His purring is poor, the sounds used to be high and strong,just sometimes...hardly ever nowadays.He's silent most of the time and he is very impacient unless he knows I am going to feed him He is always eager for a surprise to eat. Peeing??? Ha ! Impossible to describe the amounts . What used to be little balls in the sand box, became rivers... I don't know what pooping is. The most dificult in my opinion is that Teofilo cannot have low carb canned food because of his previous and chronicle disease IID. Do you Know about it? Can you also tell me what "Nardis" mean. I couldn't find its meaning. so long tchau. If you can , you answer . Who knows, may be tomorrow morning I have a good number to tell you and for me and my family to be happier. Good night.

Lybia,

Lantus should be given once every 12 hours, not every 24. That could be why your cats numbers are staying high. Hopefully the others will comment on this as I can not give any dosing advice. the best place for that would be the Lantus Forum.

Bless your heart. Patience is the key, especially with Lantus. Keep posting people here will help.

Its a process, not an event.

Conceptually, the dosing is like climbing up a downward moving escalator - Initially, you start climbing and find that if you don't go fast enough, you're right back at the bottom. If you climb too fast, you'll reach the top and get off the escalator (don't do that!). When you find the right dose, its like climbing up to the point where you want to be, then stepping up at a pace that keeps you there, with a small energy boost every 12 hours.

Each successive dose of Lantus (given every 12 hours), builds a bit more on the preceeding dose, until it hits a level where insulin use is matched by insulin doses, while always maintaining a certain amount in the depot, aka 'shed'.

If you can get your data into a spreadsheet (instructions), it will help us see what is going on, plus it is a valuable tool to share with the vet.

Alternatively, list the glucose levels you've gotten as
AMPS = morning, pre-shot test
+1 = 1 hour after insulin
+2 = 2 hours after insulin
...
+6 hours after insulin - a good time to check for nadir (lowest point)
...
PMPS = evening pre-shot test

Re: the way my cat teofilo's been doing with lantus 3th. da

Hi Lybia,

I am sorry to say this but your vet is very wrong or maybe you misunderstood the dosing? Lantus and all insulins will not last a cat for 24 hours! They are 12 hour insulins. You must give the dose 2x a day, 12 hours apart. That is why your cat is not showing improvement. This happens all the time where vets give wrong instructions for feline diabetes. You are not alone. A lot of vets just do not know the updated information because they have to study too many animals and see too few feline diabetics. You must give her lantus 12 hours apart or she will not get better! Right now she is spending half the day with no medication!

I'm sorry, but I don't know what the initials mean for the other disease.

I am new to the Message board today for Dallas19. What numbers are you talking about. My Dallas has been on lantis and I have not seen much improvement. The Vet did a blood test awhile ago.......we switched from pills to insulin. Please advise.

Re: the way my cat teofilo's been doing with lantus 3th. da

Some translations for you:

"WCR" or Whole Cat Report - are they doing all of the following 5 Ps: Playing, Purring, Preening, Pooping, Peeing

Pooping is the solid that kitty puts in the litter/sand box.

1 UI in 24 hours - I'm guessing this is 1 unit of insulin in 24 hours

Can you also tell me what "Nardis" mean. Nadir is the lowest number of the cycle - usually about the halfway point between shots pr +6.

You've got me stumped on this one. If you know what the "IID" stands for, perhaps that will make it easier for someone to respond to: "The most dificult in my opinion is that Teofilo cannot have low carb canned food because of his previous and chronicle disease IID. Do you Know about it?" ...This could be a kidney condition or something else that requires low phosphorus food... If that's the case, there are some foods on Binky's food list that are low phosphorous AND lower carb. And there are also phosphorus binders that can be added to the food so they can eat. Not sure if these are as readily available where you are, but tell us what IID translates to, and hopefully we can help.
