The Ultramarathon Part 14

I defer to Bobbi on Lantus. I just have no experience with it. I know we have had some difficult cats switch and sometimes the longer flatter cycles are very helpful for them and sometimes if they are bouncy, they continue to bounce. I would say that the experience you have gotten with ProZinc is invaluable to helping Teasel and in general, he is doing pretty well. But he is definitely a challenge and incredibly bouncy.

And Bobbi is exactly right - the best insulin is the one that works for your cat. ProZinc is more difficult to dose because you have to interpret the data. With Lantus, if he is at this number, you shoot this. For some people, the advantage of ProZinc is the flexibility. Especially with difficult cats, you have lots of options.

Selfishly, you have been an amazing asset to this forum and I would hate to have you go. But your job is to do the best for Teasel. You might look into Levemir. It is supposed to have even longer flatter cycles than Lantus.

Thank you so much, Sue! I appreciate your viewpoint. I'm still very much in the camp of liking the flexibility, options, and "transparency" of ProZinc. I'm not so sure that the "at this number, you shoot this" approach would be a magic bullet for him. I've read a little more about Levemir but there's less experience with it out there among FD owners. And I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about the past Lantus history that landed Teasel in DKA. It was awful ...

Meanwhile, I'll put all this on the back burner to let it simmer. At some point, a decision will rise to the surface and I'll go from there. That method is my go to decision-making technique - and nothing is ever carved in stone.

I'm pleased that I've been helpful on this forum - and others. I enjoy doing it and have learned a lot myself. Not going anywhere just yet! :):):)

Forgive my intrusion on here Kris but I got permission this am to change to ProZinc from Lantus as it has not done it's job with my cat Shoes. We will be switching on 12/27. Part of the reason it hasn't been the best insulin for Shoes is that I have to work and have no one else to help with this and I can't dose aggressively. Plus Shoes is a bouncy bouncy kitty and for whatever reason, his absorption rate for the lantus is really low most of the time or crazy other times. So I will be a new member of this forum soon.

Welcome, Sandi! We'll do what we can to help you with your bouncy boy. I have a little too much experience in that department ... ;) BTW - you aren't intruding! This is your new club. :D

Starting on 12/27 gives you some time to look at other SSs, ask questions about our experience with ProZinc, etc. My guy could win an Olympic medal for bouncing. I'm lucky enough to be retired so am quite free to monitor but I've learned over time that he rarely nose dives mid cycle. You can look at AM BG data and decide on a PZ dose that you think will keep your guy safe while you're away from home. It's in and out so every day is a new day, although we have some guidelines for dosing to follow.

BG at +7 was a beautiful, gorgeous, fantastic blue 6.7. :D:D:D:D He's cutting me some slack today so I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

AMPS was 23.9 - big bounce. I'm sticking with 2.6 u for a little longer because I don't want to add a dose change effect to this picture.

His excellent response yesterday was down to him being post very low AMPS on 12/16. That left him a bit more depleted of "bounce fuel" so he acted more like a "normal" FD kitty.

Que sera, sera ... I'm OK with this because of my big vent/rant/purge of 12/16. Very therapeutic, those. ;)

BG at +3 was 13.9. Love a nice sunny yellow. :D Maybe there was a squirrel dashing through the snow at AMPS?! I didn't recheck that one ...

BG at +5 was 4.3. I checked twice.:eek: I gave him lunch which had about 2Tbsp gravy style Friskies mixed with some pate Friskies. I have a Christmas thing on this afternoon that I don't want to miss. Will check BG in 30+ minutes.

Well, BG recheck shows he's still at 4.3 after his lunch that was fed about 40+ minutes ago. I've just sent regrets for my afternoon thing. Teasel's welfare comes first. He's done this a few times before and then come up just fine by +7 or +8 but I was here to keep an eye. What a monkey! Dose will be dropped again tonight.

Note to self: Pay attention when he drops at +3 instead of rising slightly or staying near AMPS.

BG at +7 was 5.9. Obviously not that carb sensitive. Good to know going forward. Even the !%&@@! events give you good data.
Meanwhile, he's been happy as a clam the whole time, was chasing his sibs just before lunch and wanted to get into a boxing match with his brother. I figured his before lunch BG would be good but not THAT good!

Wow! I guess Teasel just really didn't want you to go out ;)

And I'm with Sue. I love it when you share your thought process! It helps me think through Hermione's weirdness, even if Teasel may not exactly match what she's doing at the time.

BG at +9 was 6.2. Interesting ... and no carb spike from the gravy Friskies I mixed in with his regular pate Friskies. Another learning experience for me today.
