The switch

Okay, I FINALLY got the go ahead to switch over from Prozinc to Lantus. The Lantus pens will be hear Tuesday.

My Prozinc is at the end, and not as potent. However, I did lower the dose because I was gone this weekend and my bf wasn't as equip to deal with the blue numbers.

Okay, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I can get midday numbers. I was definitely going to get the +2, +6, +8 and +10.

I was planning on starting Wednesday at 1u, with the approval of the group. However, I can't midday test till Friday. Now, it was mentioned that I most likely will not have an issue because the dose is so low.

@Djamila has been one of the people who have been helping me in the Prozinc group.

I have ready all the Lantus stickies multiple times, but I think I will start to get it more once I start.

1. Can I keep the Lantus in the crisper in the middle of my fridge?
2.will light effect it?
3.i know how to withdraw it, but if some accidentally goes back in the pen do I have to toss it? I know it contaimintates the pen, but is once too much? Is Lantus that touchy?

Thank you for your answers.

Welcome to lantus. I kept my lantus on a shelf in the fridge. If the crisper is the same temp as the shelves you will be fine. No worries if some insulin back in the pen. I had it happen and I used my pens to the last drop. Being a depot drug you might be fine without a mid test the first couple of days but some do have a strong reaction initially. I was determined not to hone test so shot blindly at the beginning and brought my cat to the vet a few times a week at first and he was fine. I soon became a testaholic. Knowing what I know now I would want to watch more closely at first and would wait until I could to begin. An alternative would be to leave food out if your cat won’t gobble it up right away. Most cats become hungry when they drop. Sorry I can’t be more definitive.

So I give a very small amount of YA zero dry because my cat is upsessed with dry. It helps prevent him from sneaking and going after my dog's kibbles.

I do leave LC wet food out with extra water all day, but it's gone 2 hrs prior to testing at preshots.

Would 200 be my beginning no shoot number at first?

Since you feed some dry food you’ll should follow SLGS. I see he was diagnosed in 2017. Has he been on insulin since then? If yes then I would use a lower no shot number. Lantus likes consistency so if you don’t shoot often the depot won’t fill and it won’t work as it’s supposed to work. It depends on your comfort level but maybe start with 150. What do you think?

He's been on Prozinc since then, yes. I'm okay with that number.

I was told the thing that was most different was the shoot number and getting use to shooting at low numbers. Could you explain?

I’ll try. Lantus doesn’t usually onset until at least +1. For Max a +1 was useless. He would onset at +2.5 or +3. Have a look at his spreadsheets. He also bounced for about a year and the I got him tightly regulated. That’s why it’s not as important to make sure they eat when you inject. While I have not used anything but lantus, Prozinc acts quickly fromwhat I've read. You get a more gentle curve usually withdepot drugs.

I’d read the yellow stick on how lantus/Levimar work as it might make more sense.

Does this help? Keep asking questions. It helps us to help you.

Please make sure you have U100 syringes. (Prozinc uses U40 syringes.)

With Prozinc, you can slide the dose based on your pre-shot number -- you're basing your dose on the pre-shot test. With Lantus, dosing is largely based on the nadir. Unless you have a test that is way low, you would still shoot. Where that number is depends on your level of experience with FD and with Lantus. Generally, at the outset, we suggest you post if you get a number that's lower than 150. Usually,, there's someone around to lend a hand.

A Lantus curve, once a cat is more regulated, is flat (in theory). I was following TR with Gabby and would shoot anything above 50. That's what we mean by shooting low.

An alternative to YA is Stella & Chewys - they have freeze dried raw food you can crumble. Likewise freeze dried chicken may be an option for your kitty. If you're going to use YA, you're limited to using SLGS as a dosing method.

@Sienne and Gabby (GA) , I do have 100u's with half markings. Also, he won't touch freeze-dried. I've tried. Eventually, I may try and loose dry food altogether after I get the hang of Lantus.

Once I get started I will feel better I think, more in control.

Another dry to try is Dr. Elsey’s Clean Protein. My friend’s cat likes it. My kittens wouldn’t eat it but they are used to raw.
