He is just extra boogery. When I pick him up he has bitten me 3 times. He is back to his playful self. Yesterday we had a hard time getting him to give him his shot. But only the once was he a brat while trying to give him his shot. I think he is a kid with low blood sugar wanting food. He has been tearing up his bag and boxes a lot too. I give them to him under the table so he won't go at the furniture with his claws.

It's good that he has got his spunk back but please be aware of the symptoms of hypos as you aren testing him at all are you?

If he is still on the four units twice a day you might want to review this with your vet. Were you waiting on a meter to come in the post. That really. Is the best way to keep the rock safe and understand how well the Novolin is working.
Thank you, I told the vet techs today about his low symptoms. He is getting a sugar curve done today. He is up to 19 lbs and the jaundice is gone. The techs said he looks great and that he cheated death! We will be discussing long term care today when I pick him up. The techs recognized him immediately by name and looked at his ears in the waiting room confirming the jaundice is gone! Eeeeekkkkk I am so happy. The last time I left I had the script for the appetite stimulant and they said he was not out of the woods yet....

That's fantastic news:). You worked really hard to get him better. I really wish that you could change the rock over to a longer acting insulin such as Lantus, levemir or prozinc. They stay in the system for longer and so offer much better protection from high blood glucose.

One of the problems with the insulin he is on is in and out of the system quickly and can cause very steep drops that can leave glucose levels very low. These drops can make a cat feel crappy. It can happen with others ofcourse. High blood glucose always leads to the risk of ketones developing.

I think we have mentioned this before but you can get lantus cheaper online from Canadian pharmacies and you can even buy one 3 ml pen cartridge at a time.

Could you print this off and take it with you

Good luck. :bighug:

We may have figured out why he is crankey before feeding....his glucose testing at the vet 92 after an all night fast, and with insulin it dropped steadily to 54. We are going 48 hours no insulin and bringing him back. They think he is no longer a diabetic! The techs even noticed him before and after breakfast was a huge change in character. He eats like a champ again. Is there any info on this site about diet long term after DKA, jaundice, hepatic lipidosis and diabetes is gone?

Wow that is great news

Well for a start what you have to remember is that diabetes is never gone as such it is seen as being diet controlled and so you are right diet is vital in keeping his blood glucose under control.

What food is he on now? He needs a wet food that has less than 10% of calories from carbohydrates but you need to be careful about just switching over as you don't want the change upsetting his tummy. They recommend switching 25 % per day.

This link will take you to a chart that shows a lot of food. You are looking for a food that is low in carbs, less than 10%. Most US members seem to go with Friskies. Not sure if there are all okay so check on the list

If he is on a dry food you will need to stop the insulin before you switch food as switching can reduce the need for insulin and clearly you don't want him going any lower.

My concern is that as you aren't monitoring his blood glucose you aren't going to know what is happening to the rock and if his blood glucose remains in the normal zone without the insulin. If you have your mums meter now would be the time to give it ago.

Blood sugar was 143 this morning, after 48 hours with no insulin. 3 week checkup will be a relief, if we can get that far symptom free. I am waiting on the glucose monitor still, but they think it was a bad case of pancreatitis that started his downward spiral. He gets half a can of wet morning and night with a few dry kibbles here and there. He is regulating his weight around 19. It sounds fat but he is Maine Coon sized and can fully groom himself. Thank you everyone for all the help, all the links with all thin info!!!!
