  • what insulin you use and what dose
  • what glucose meter you'll be using at home (cheers to you for testing!)
  • what food Chunky eats
  • any other health issues Chunky has or meds he gets.
Right now I have Chunk on Vetsulin. He gets 3 units in the AM, and 4 in the PM.

I have no idea what glucose meter I'll be using, I just decided to start testing at home yesterday. Any suggestions for decent, reasonably priced brands?

Right now, Chunky, Radar and Calvin are all eating Dave's wet food, but a local pet store suggested Tiki, and said it's a great food for diabetic cats. They sell variety packs, so I was thinking of trying that kind when the cats get tired of Dave's. I'm also giving Blue Buffalo dry kibble. It's helpful to have a bag of that on hand, since Chunk decided he doesn't like the wet food I have. Tomorrow I'll be getting a different flavor of Dave's.

The only other issues Chunky has is that he absolutely will NOT use the litter box. Besides having diabetes, he's fine. He's a bit of a mystery, but fine.

One of the most popular meters here is the Relion Confirm or Micro meter from WalMart.....it takes the tiniest sample size and the strips are affordable ($35.88/100) and if you have a 24 hour WalMart, you can get them anytime (which is important when kitty decides to go low at 3am on a Sunday morning!)

Tiki is fine...it's a good low carb food but you really want to get rid of the kibble as soon as possible....it's too high in carbs for a diabetic cat. We want them to eat a diet of less than 10% carbs and some of those dry foods are over 35%!

Keep trying to transition Chunky off the dry.....I know some are real kibble addicts but it can make a world of difference in the numbers you get! Here are some Tips on Transitioning that might help

I think the Dave's Grain Free foods are less than 10% too

It's like trying to get control of a human diabetic's numbers while continuing to eat potato chips

The litter box avoidance is pretty painful. You may want to make sure there is an extra litter box. If there are 3 cats, then 4 litter boxes. I clean ours at least twice a day.
