Thanks again to everyone who answered my urgent message last night. This morning did not bring good news. Lotus reading was 30.7 I gave her 1/2 a unit because I
did not want a huge rebound like before. in three hours it was down to 15.5 but she was not eating. I had faxed all her blood readings to my vet who just phoned me.
I had an ultra sound done on her pancreas in April and it showed a 6 mm nodule that was not pacreatic tissue. The vet starts talking about now she is concerned there is
something underlying that is causing this huge jumps in blood sugar. After a few minutes I realize she has misread the fax and has read the 15 minute apart blood
readings as day by day readings. I stop her in full flight and advise her of her error. I just told her outright that I was going to give her Friskies Chef pate to try and
get her to eat and would check her blood again. It was hopeless talking to her. As I said last night I got more information from this board than I have ever go from the
vet's office. So i take her blood reading and it is now 15.3 I gave her some food and she ate about 2 tablespoons but now she is hiding under the couch. Do you think I
should give her another 1/2 unit or just try hard to get her to eat more?

I think her numbers are fine for the .5 unit and with her other complications. She came down from the 500s (in our numbers) to the high 200s with just that much insulin.

What you need is some data to base your doses on. And you are getting that. The insulin is working. Are you remembering that breathing thing?

It would be best if she would eat, but Lantus is a mild insulin so it isn't an emergency. Some ways to get them to eat the wet food: Add some warm water to make a soupy consistency. Warm it up in the microwave until nice and stinky. Some cats like parmesan cheese or tuna juice on top.

One thing that will help us a lot is for you to get a spreadsheet up. (Have you seen others? It is a great color coded tool that shows the history of dosing and numbers and will help others guide you. And best of all, we have a world version that will convert your metric numbers to ours and back again.)

I have set up lots of spreadsheets for people. There is just a little info I need from you. I will send you a private message and you can decide whether you want me to set it up. (Look on the top of the page for 1 New Message)

thanks so much for your answer. She is starting to eat a bit here and there but still runs like the devil when she sees me. She has come out from under the couch. I have also check her skin (dehydration?) and it seems to 'snap' back fast and her gums are slick and my finger slide over them OK. I can see now that I am going to have to rely
on you wonderful people out there to help me regulate her as my vet doesn't seem to know what she is doing. Secretly I had decided that if she is not a little bit better
by the weekend I would have to do the necessary and I just don't want to have to  I don't have any ketone sticks so I will be going out to the drug store to get some. I would love it if you could set up a spread sheet for me. that would be so helpful!

Okay, your spreadsheet is set up. If I were you, I would go over to the Lantus forum and ask for dosing help. Their posting rules are a little different than this forum, but they will be patient with you if you tell them you are a Newbie and have trouble with computers.

Here is the forum:

Be sure to read through the starred topics under the grey line. One, they will ask if you have and Two, they have lots of good information you can use.

Post something like NEWBIE needs dose advice.
