Is Prozinc made from porcine & PZI is bovine? My vet is wanting to change my cats medication. He will order it for me but said Prozinc, can’t PZI be used instead due to cost? Does anyone know if these make a big difference or not?

Where do I find the least expensive? Thank you in advance if anyone can help.

Honestly, I'm not sure. I didn't think PZI was made anymore. I believe there is a way to order prozinc online that a few people have used.

@Yong, do you remember where? or who has ordered that way?
 
Prozinc is actually made from human DNA from what I understand - human recumbant. PZI is bovine. So they are different.

Pretty sure PZI can still be made but it is usually compounded but I'm really not sure. I did find this website though http://bcpvetpharm.com/bcp-pzi-bovine-insulin/ and one other company.

I believe PZI is still made, but not as widely used. It is dosed similarly to ProZinc. From what I recall, it was used before ProZinc was created. @Elizabeth and Bertie used it I think (not sure if she'll see the tag as I don't know how often she is on the board anymore). @Larry and Kitties didn't you use it once too or am I remembering incorrectly?

Ok so if I need Prozinc then where should I get this? Least expensive...Thank you all for responding! I’m very thankful for you all...

Have you started home testing yet? That is a extremely high dose for a newly diagnosed kitty and it could be causing some very low numbers or hypos.
 
I have began testing, lucky that I have because she became hypo. I knew this was too high a dose & altered it on my own!
My son & fiancé are internal med physicians. The fiancé is an endocrinologist. They have helped me so much.
I finally got my vet (dif than 1st) to ok an order for prozinc as she is all over the place with Novolin.
Thank you all & if I disappear it’s because I am in cat care crazy mode. I am so thankful for all the help.
 
PZI and Prozinc are different formulas, but still both in-and-out insulins. Some have ordered from allivet :). Total + S&H was like $119. I never had to order from there because the Vet we were getting it from was just a dollar more and it was a 5 minute drive so I just picked mine up from them. Hope Prozinc helps Baby G spend less trampoline time than Novolin :cat:
 
I ordered prozinc from Allivet at $129.00; $29 of it was cold ship. I’m on disability but at this point I’d do anything! I looked everywhere yesterday & today but not many carry it & it was $50 more in town. So hoping this is fast & works!
Its nice that you can pick it up! I read that your cat had pancreatitis, which numbers on the blood work show this & symptoms of Maury? Baby is having loose & light color stool again & a vomit yesterday. ???? Thank you again- it helps to know I’m not alone!

Again thank you all for your help. I don’t know if I’m the only one but if my Baby is sick than I loose my mind.
It doesn’t help that she has both eyes removed from glaucoma. And I had to put my little Lizzie ,17.5 yr old down from mamm cancer just as Baby became ill. (5 weeks ago) I haven’t even had any grieving time but maybe it’s best... God has plans? I’m saying no more pets after this! Just bad luck

Getting ready to head out the door for work, so quick answer: Maury threw up and had one instance of diarrhea. When he didn't want to eat his wet food the next morning and had another bout of diarrhea, I consulted the forum and called his new Vet. He had nausea and diarrhea, essentially. Vet and I are pretty sure it was a mild flare so we treated it conservatively. I was also unemployed and couldn't afford an aggressive treatment :(. No blood work to confirm, just had a SNAP fPL test which gives a yes or no for pancreatitis.
