Hi Everyone,

My boy is doing really well with his blood glucose levels.
However the capacity of his bladder would lead you to believe he's a small elephant hiding in a furry cat suit. The volume he pees is still vast.

We've been using the Catsan Smartpacks, but they're simply not economical and no longer very effective for his needs.
I'd be hugely grateful for any recommendations you have for good quality, effective, absorbent, economical litter.

Thank you in advance,
Amy

I use the PetCo brand of clumping litter. It has refillable buckets or bottles and is unscented. Less dusty than the generic at Pet Supplies Plus.

Hi Amy,

I've tried loads of cat litters in hopes of finding that 'perfect one', but it just doesn't seem to exist.....

I currently use Cat's Best 'Oko Plus' for my lot. It's a natural unscented clumping litter, and seems to have relatively little dust. It does seem to track quite a bit though, but I think most cat litters do to some degree, and I like this litter so much I just put up with it. I do have cat litter trays with detachable rims to them to try to stop the litter from being pushed over the edges (my little Milo tries to dig to Australia whenever he uses the litter tray and the stuff flies everywhere!). The litter is actually flushable (in small amounts). But I also have a couple of litter disposal bins ('Litter Champ' from Zooplus) and find these are brilliant for popping the clumps or poops into.

Another popular litter in the UK is World's Best, which comes in several different types. I tried it and quite liked it; but Bertie liked it too much and kept eating the stuff!

Thank you BJM and Eliz,
The all winning, all shining cat litter definitely seems a bit elusive!
But I've just ordered 10l of Cat's Best Oko Plus from zooplus.

Dr Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra. I won't even other use litter I get free. We use it at the free-roaming shelter I volunteer at too now. Even though it is more expensive, it just works so much better there is so much less waste that it works out to be more economical that getting the cheap stuff and having to dump the litter boxes weekly. Less dust, less odor, better clumping.

I use chicken feed - vegetarian crumbles. You want to be sure your kitty won't eat it but if not then it's great and completely dust free. I sprinkle a very little clay clumping litter with it to make it clump better.

Putting the question of changing litter...how long since you had kidney function examined? Diabetes can do damage to vital organs. If his sugars are consistently stable, I'd take a look at kidney function. There is a condition known as high output kidney failure. Give it some thought. Good luck from jane and stewey

Thank you, Jane and Stewey!

I think he's OK, but I'm pleased you've flagged this up - always good to be armed and aware.
Thankfully his output is actually decreasing, despite being vast - off shoot of steroid use. He had a full panel at the time of his diabetes diagnosis (not kong ago) and liver and kidney function was looking good. Vet was reassured and happy nothing other than diabetes was at play.

But I'll definitely be on the ball with this.

Hi Eliz,

He's been doing well.. numbers at about 5.
But wary today as last night he was at 8, though not sure if that's because one of my boy's managed to feed him a gourmet gold gravy tin? Could it have that effect? This morning he was at 7.2 however, so I'll be watching our dance closely :):cat:

I use the same litter and find it is the best here in the UK. I also have the same problem with Romulus digging to Australia. He sends the tray rims flying too sometimes!!! and the tracking through the house. You get used to hoovering multiple times a day!! Is it just my weird cats who can spend all night out and are waiting at the door in the morning with crossed legs and they all make a dash for the trays?

Just a quick update during my insomniac awake moment.
Eliz, thank you.. totally sold on the Cat's Best Oko Plus. As litter's go, it's fantastic. Murphy likes it too!
Update on numbers too - we're still doing well. Evening tests seems to be higher, around about 6, morning tests are lower and anywhere between 3 and 5.
The vet wants to do a fructosamine test soon - which I know will be useful, but Murphy despises going to the vets. We'll go however, of course. :):cat:

Hi Rhonda,
Apologies for that - I had trouble uploading that from the start as I filled out the US rather than the worldwide form. I'll reload his old data when I get a chance, but I haven't don't any 'proper' curves since he stopped needing insulin. I've just been testing 2 or 3 times a day.

Thanks, both!
Is it actually 14 days insulin free, that you can be classed as otj?
Eliz, this began as an update on the Cat litter recommendation you'd made, before I realised how many days Murphy hasn't been needing extra insulin. Not sure if you read it, but the Oko Plus is far far better than any other we've tried.. and Murphy agrees. Thank you! :):cat:
