Puma is officially off insulin... his last dose was 0.5 U PZI on 7/18.
Our 4 year old Manx cat was diagnosed 7/3. With the help of this community, his life was saved and his diabetes placed in check. Start low, go slow, and switching from dry food to Fancy Feast has done it.
No help from the vet, I'm afraid. Maybe we were just unlucky, but our vet's recommendations and desire to do everything at the vet would have risked either prolonged illness or hypo.

Thank you so much, everyone!
I know that it's a remission, not a cure. We'll continue to pay close attention to his weight, his food, his behavior, and will check occasional BG.

Jane!

Congrats to you and Puma. :-D I love it when that happens!

You said this in your very first post a couple weeks ago:
This vet "doesn't believe" in home monitoring, when I asked about it he commented that it makes people manage their cats too closely.
hmmm, managing too closely, we wouldn't want that now would we?

Very, very happy for you, Puma, and all your other furries,

Carl

So happy for you!!! I remember your first post here -- stating that your vet had started Puma at 2 units, and did not believe in home testing. I hope you have an opportunity share with this vet your spreadsheet and your experience related to the value of home testing. May not change his mind, but then again, it might help influence his decisions about the next diabetic kitty that crosses his path. Like the FDMB tag line says -- "Saving Diabetic Cats since 1996" -- one kitty at a time. So very happy for you and Puma!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS: Can you attach a photo of Puma so we can see what the pretty boy looks like? I have always wondered. :)

Couldn't have done it without you! And yes, I do plan to go back to our local vet and share this story with him.
Here's a link (if I'm doing this right) to a picture of Puma (the tuxedo Manx on the left) in the box with Sushki, who was a feral kitten and has a lot of Maine Coon in her. And Puma with Mishky, who was also a feral kitten, under the Christmas tree.

I couldn't figure out how to get the image directly into the post, sorry!

So beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice to put a handsome face with this great news!!!! Love the one under the Christmas tree! Looks like they are hiding out under the tree and waiting to surprise Santa...or maybe waiting to eat Santa's cookies and milk as soon as his back is turned. LOL!! Thanks for posting these!!!!!!
