I am now a firm believer of testing! The first week or so after Tiggers diagnosis, we rarely tested because at the time we had a vet who said we only really need to do it once a week. Wrong! Even though most of the time he tests on the high side, there have been a few times just recently where his number has been low enough to not need insulin. This morning was one of them. I fought him and fought him to get his ear pricked. He was having nothing of it this morning! I finally gave up after a couple of tries and thought "well he was 400 last night so he's probably still high this morning". Boy was I glad I decided to give it a third try! He was 136! I did it again just to make sure it wasn't a fluke and it was 137. No insulin this morning! It truly is Russian roulette if you don't test. I dread to think how low he would be if I had given him his shot. Now he'll probably shoot up to 400 in a few hours

Good catch! Yes, you never know when they'll surprise you.

If he jumps up high Within an hour or so(and yes, you are right, he most likely will) you could give him less insulin later. Since Vetsulin doesn't usually last the whole 12 hours, it wouldn't be hard to get back on schedule. Can you test in an hour? I'd lower the dose to 2.5 or so. My thinking is that if the Vetsulin was still working at +12, the dose is too high.

TERRIFIC job, Carol, in being so determined to get that test this morning!:bighug:
Isn't it amazing how they can throw us such a curve ball sometimes? What I've found interesting, too: There have been times that my cat (who is normally calm @ test time, now that we've been doing it for so long;)) will suddenly struggle against the ear-poke --- & the test turns out to be unusually high. Yet on some other occasions when she fights me on the poke? The # is way low! So I found out that agitation in a cat is not always a hallmark of high blood glucose. (Talk about confusing, eh?)

But no matter which way it rolls out @ test time: We all learn the importance of home-monitoring for keeping our dear kitties safe!:)

Carol - Nice job in being persistent. I bet something deep down inside was telling you, you must get a test. Thanks again for sharing this too. You probably have "Paid it Forward" to many and have saved a few lives not to mention Tiggers!

Thanks all! Now I have a dilemma. I just tested him at +4 and he was 481! That classified as a bounce? And why does it do this?? So aggravating! I try so hard and then sometimes I feel like I'm just going in circles and getting nowhere. So he didn't get his morning insulin because of the low reading, and is not due for his evening insulin until about 8 o'clock. The problem with today is we are leaving this afternoon for my daughter's birthday celebration and we won't be home until late this evening. So he'll miss evening shot. Should I just give them three units before we leave at around 2 PM?

You'll be off schedule if you do shoot it either way so the question really is which schedule change is better for you. Yep a sky high bounce that will last a while.

I don't know your timezone so you may already be gone as it's a bit after 3pm CST as I'm answering this...or 'unanswering' as the case may be...
