I just had a question per testing for ketones..

Does it need to be fresh urine?
That might sound like a weird question, but il explain..
One of bear’s symptoms before diagnosis was he was going outside his litter box.
Since starting insulin it hasnt improved much yet, so we set up a pee pad station in his favourite corner as he just kept going in the same spot.. (has been deodorized multiple times with enzyme cleaner). But its near one of his water bowls so maybe thats why..

Anyway, we have a rubber mat underneath the pad when we are at work to prevent the urine seeping into the floor and sometimes it pools on the mat.
Would that be an acceptable way to get a sample?
I know theres a sticky on how to get a sample, but just wondering if it was doable this way since its already there 😅

To test for Ketones ,,you must capture the urine as your cat Is urinates otherwise it will be contaminated, so, not from the pee pad or litter, if your cat urine su in the box in the same place always, as they usually do when you see him going to the box place a small cup you will probably get enough urine to test, you just need enough to dip the strip

That makes sense- thank you!

I was also reading on the forum that we can test the blood of ketones? Wondering if this is easier than trying to “catch” his urine 🤭

Hi, I'm pretty new here and new to dealing with FD. But I wanted to just chime in on the blood tester for ketones. I bought one on amazon BASIC STARTER KIT - GK+ Blood Glucose & Ketone Meter
It's a starter kit so it came with 10 bg strips and 10 ketone strips. Those 10 were really all I need for now because those 10 should be enough if I'm ever worried about ketones and Monster has never tested positive for ketones. I wanted something on hand so I could check her and the urine way was not going to be easy to do. I understand the urine testers are cheaper but I thought I would share the information with you.

We have all felt overwhelmed whe we are told that our precious fur baby had FD, we have felt guilty, scared, but FD is manageable, and this Furum has amazing knowledge le members that can help you on this journey, we can help you on the right diet dosing, the best insulina for FD are Lantus and ProZinc, wet can food diet between 0-10% carbs is very important to regular your cat, a seceding schedule, home testing, and lots of cuddles and love😉

The other issue with urinary ketones is that the urine has been sitting in your cat's bladder for who knows how long. As a result, you're not getting an up to the minute level for ketones. In general, it's OK and less of an issue if you were using urine to test for glucose. A blood ketone meter gives you an up to the minute result.

Either way is fine. You do have to use a fresh urine sample, though.
