Got a small drop of blood and touched the test strip and my meter was reading it then it shows 30. He hasn't had any insulin at all yet. I am not about to give him any of he's this low. Been on fancy feast classics chicken and turkey. Also feeding Oriejn dry food but very little. About to switch to Young Again.

He's never had any insulin? Including this morning?

That's too low....You might want to re-test just to make sure that's a valid test

I might suggest doing a retest. Sometimes strips will give an off reading. Considering that Tobey has not had any insulin that seems like a low number...although even some non-diabetic kitties do run lower than others

Stephanie, Congrats on your first test! Did you get another?
I tested again this morning. I didn't prepare well I guess. I was tired and rushed into it them got discouraged because I can't imagine poking him twice daily and squeezing blood from him. But the test gave me an error because I didn't get enough blood to go all the way down the strip. Seemed like enough blood at first but when I got the strip next to it didn't suck enough through. Tried squeezing ear more but I just got tired of messing with him and he was starving. He tolerates it really well though. He's a very good boy.

I used neosporin and rubbed his ear between my fingers to help it. The poke goes well but never enough blood. Using 30 gauge lancet.

get some 28 gauge lancets... 30 is making too small a hole for an ear not used to bleeding. when I was first starting I would poke twice in the same spot in order to get a big enough drop.

Love the new avatar, he's cute! Try the lancets Janet mentioned, and keep practicing. It took me awhile to get it consistently too.

I use the 28 gauge lancets and find that size to work very well. For myself I prefer to do the poke free hand with a cosmetic pad behind the ear to keep it firm.

Ear pokeys get easier as it goes along!

Hi Stephanie, congrats on the first ever test!
Hopefully you'll manage to get another test today, a good one so you can see what Tobey's numbers are really doing. And please fill in the SS if you get a good reading today :)
I'm so excited for you!:bighug:

Hey Stephanie, glad to see you've gotten started too. Sounds like you had about as frustrating of an experience as me when trying to test. I nearly cried! I'm curious to know Tobey's readings, 'cause Serena's got some low levels going on, although we believe this is due to too high of a dose...

He's very handsome BTW!

Thanks! I still haven't gotten it down and he seems to be fine except now just only wanting his fancy feast instead of the expensive zero carb young again. I leave it out for free feeding when I'm at work all day. He loved it when first starting. I think I'm too stressed out over this that I mess up the test. I don't want to poke him too many time in a row so I give up after not enough blood and error message appears. So frustrating.

try two quick pricks in the same spot, usually that will generate enough blood.

I set the meter time and date, is there anything else I need to do to it? Doesn't have a huge option on any other settings. I was afraid I got a bad reading when I got a 30 on the one and only result. Lol
