Tested my Civilian Cat

Interesting perspective - which in some ways leaves me more confused but here it is anyway. After reading the suggestion here I went in and tested our other cat - she is a Maine Coon also, similar background to Robbie (same gene pool basically) but a female who weighs about 14lbs - she eats a higher carb food (she tends to be skinny for her body frame) is 12 years old and in amazing shape. Was JUST tested in order to have a cyst removed and all her blood work came back excellent. She ate about half a can of food about a 45 minutes ago and I tested her just now and it was 45 (tester said "do you need a snack?"). Pretty far off the 70 to 120 range but she's fine, or at least seems fine. Out of sheer curiosity I'm going to test her again later tonight but I thought that was kind of interesting and would love to hear any thoughts on this - is my meter screwy? Do my cats tend to be "normal" at lower numbers (which makes Robbies numbers even more scary) or is this just part of her normal curve and I jumped in at a low ebb?

Snowshoe tests 45 - 60....when he just can't stand brother getting pokie and treats, he'll run to the table and lay down in test position when he hears the test case zipper. I take that opportunity to test him...all HE wants is a treat and extra attention.... :-D

I did that with my Gustav too, in 2008. Age 13 then. Tested him and his blood glucose was lower than Simbas. He was also healthy all his life and also then in 2008, except for getting cancer but he never developed diabetes even if he was on high carb dry food.

Two things.... If you are using a human meter, keep in mind that most of them read lower than "reality" when used on cats. Some up to 20-30 points lower.
And, all meters are allowed to be off by +/- 20% by the FDA or whoever makes up rules like that. So the 45 could be as much as 54 and still be considered "accurate".

I've never tested my civvy, Mullet. I'm pretty sure I would lose at least one limb if I tried. But I test Bob occasionally and I've seen his numbers range from 45-80 or so depending on time of day that I happen to test him. I think your girl is fine with that number. I know the things we look for with a diabetic cat in terms of when the food boost shows up, and when the insulin onsets, and when nadir is supposed to be. But with a non-diabetic, I'm not really sure what a "curve" of natural insulin would look like. I don't know if there are peaks and dips in BG, or if they are pretty much flat line all day.

My sugar Bean has read in the 40's ever since she has been in remission. I even called the vet to see if that was ok.

I did a LOT of practice tests on my other kitties, since Grayson wasn't bleeding much. They typically came in between 45 and 55.

For an interesting perspective, take a look at Cathy's Kitten (catannc). Kitten will celebrate her 14th full day as a healthy cat (we all know what THAT means!) tomorrow morning at 6:30 EST (she's on the PZI forum if you can't find her). Her numbers, even those with food, are amazing!

Nothing wrong w/ your meter, I'm guessing, just a healthy cat w/ a healthy pancreas. Count your blessings!

All of my civies test between 45-60 so nothing wrong with your meter it just seems cat with a healthy pancreas test low on a human meter which is why the range for normal on a human meter is between 40-120 and on a pet only meter it is between 70-150 just a different calibration for a human meter and a pet only meter.
