Since then, Tasha took a bit of a turn and quit eating, started hiding. We stopped the antibiotics and did an ultrasound with her regular vet. At that point, she was down over a pound. The ultrasound didn't show anything horrible (no cancer, no kidney stones) and nothing obvious, though her right kidney is horribly misshapen. They weren't able to get a urine sample that day but her blood pressure was normal so they ruled out hypertension. We opted to skip antibiotics at that point without anything definitive because we wanted to get her eating.
The following week, she had gained a little weight back and was acting much better. They were able to do a cysto and I've just gotten the final results of the urine culture - negative. Nothing grew and no indication of any infection.
The doctor says maybe that right kidney is the result of previous trauma, either a stone(s) passed or another infection in the past. She ruled out a few other things (interstitial cystitis, for example), and at this point, since she's eating and acting better, she wants us to monitor and let her know about any drastic changes.
She's responding well to the Lantus (I know, her sheet needs updating - I may increase her dose once I have a chance to look things over and feel confident about 0.10u) and we're in a good place overall. The vet is amazed at her performance on her "rain drop" dose.
If anyone has any ideas about the blood in the urine, I'm interested in hearing them. We're kinda stuck but grateful Tasha's acting well and eating again.
