Talbot who has had diabetes has a since he was 12 has a severe case of pancreatitis. Xena, his litter mate was diagnosed first and received fluids and med's. Sam, another litter mate was diagnosed a couple of days latter. He required iv fluids and is at the vet for a second day.

I brought Talbot in today because he looked a little dumpy last night and did not eat last night. He threw up blood (as the other cats had). They said he was severely dehydrated and is on pain killers, anti nausea and iv fluids. They said it is very touch and go and would at the very lease need to be at the emergency vet over the weekend. Husband worries that it is too much to put him through and the cost of course is a big worry. They all just turned 18, which I know is old but his kidneys and other values are all in good shape so this should not be happening!

I called a vet in the twin cities that makes house calls to pts but they are booked until tomorrow. Geeez.

It is breaking my heart. SO HOW DO THREE CATS GET SERVER PANCREATITIS? THE ONLY COMMON FACTOR IS THAT THEY ALL ATE WELLNESS CANNED FOOD. THE CHICKEN VARIETY AND THE TURKEY VARIETY. VET SAYS IT HAS TO BE ORAL FOR THIS TO HAPPEN TO ALL THREE.

I am so very sorry to hear of Talbot's illness and know how heartbroken, worried and confused you must be. I just wanted to say I will send prayers and healing thoughts for Talbot and to tell you you're in my thoughts.

They are all 3 litter mates, so they have common genetic susceptibilities, too.

Melinda, I am so sorry to hear that you, Talbot and the rest of the family are going through this. Pancreatitis is miserable. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers and I hope that all of your kitties are feeling better very soon.

I am so sorry to hear about Talbot, Xena and Sam having pancreatitis. My girl has it too, but she was not as severely affected as these three little ones when she had a flare 2 months ago. It took a while to find a good food for Saoirse but she did make a great recovery, so much so one might not believe it possible if one saw how ill she was at the peak of the attack (nauseated, inappetent, crouching, very lethargic and depressed during the attack, but now she looks very like her avatar - only younger). Meds that helped her were cyproheptadine (appetite), ondansetron (nausea), famotidine (stomach acid). She also received a course of B12 injections and they gave her system a general boost. Feeding very little and very often helped, too, as did the poaching liquid from breasts of chicken with hydration.

My heart goes out to you: pancreatitis flares are dreadful. I will keep you all in my prayers and I hope they will all pull through and get better very soon.
