We just switched to Lantus from vetsulin. With vetsulin, we're supposed to wait 30 min after feeding to shoot. I don't see anything about that for Lantus, so do we shoot as soon as she's done eating?

DISREGARD -- FOUND MY ANSWER Secondly, in the intro to Lantus post it says the following: "Manufacturers do not recommend refrigerating an in-use pen. Therefore, shelf life may be shortened to 28 days"

Does that mean we shouldn't put the pen in the refrigerator after the first dose? I thought they were supposed to be kept refrigerated when possible. Am I not reading this correctly?

Those are the instructions for humans or people use pen needles to inject. For cats, we put the pens (in use and not used yet) in the fridge. However, if you are using the pen needles, instead of syringes to give the insulin, you have to leave it outside the fridge. Otherwise the pen mechanism might not work. The pen by itself is fine in the fridge.

From this post on the top of the Lantus/Lev/Biosimilars forum:
Insulin Care & Syringe Info: Proper Handling, Drawing, Fine Dosing
In-use and unopened Lantus, Levemir, and the Biosimilars should be stored in the refrigerator between 36 to 46 degrees F (2 to 8 degrees C).

Also we recommend using syringes with the pens instead of the pen needles. You can get more accurate dosing with the syringes. Also with the pen needles you waste insulin since they have to be primed.

Yep, I got the syringes, despite the confusion of the pharmacist lol.

Am I still supposed to wait before shooting though?

Many people give the cat insulin while they are distracted with their head in the feeding bowl. We typically do test, feed, then shoot all within 10-15 minutes.
