Syringes in Canada

Hi, what would be the cheapest place to get syringes in Canada? And do I need a care kit to go with them or is there a more economical way to dispose of the needles? We were led to purchase the ProZinc kit from our vet. I am not trying to sound crass or uncaring, we love our Batty... but our budget is crap right now and two $250 vet bills back to back has killed our savings.

Make sure you order the U40 syringes (red cap). When I used this company in the past, the delivery was very quick. That may be different now under covid.

Lantus is a much cheaper insulin in Canada if your vet will authorize the switch. You can buy it from human pharmacies (no prescription required if for a cat). A box of 5 pen vial runs about $110 and should last you a year. For Lantus, however, you would need to buy U100 syringes (orange cap).
 
Thank you, I appreciate the advice. Our previous vet was unwilling to authorize us using anything but ProZinc but we have a new vet who seems more open to more affordable alternatives. I will bring this up when we have our appointment with them on Thursday.
 
Prozinc is a U40 insulin (red cap syringes).
Lantus is a U100 insulin (orange cap syringes).
The syringes are not interchangeable.

When Checkers was on Prozinc, I got the u-40 syringes from petsdrugmart the link above. I think you can also get Prozinc there too.

To dispose of the syringes I use pliers to snip off the needle part (carefully) and drop it into one of those Illy coffee tins and just toss the rest of the syringe in the garbage. Haven't figured out what to do with the tin yet, but it is less than a quarter full.

I asked what my diabetic human neighbor does with the syringes, she just tosses them in the garbage.:eek:.
 
If you switch to Lantus, Walmart and Safeway have good prices on insulin and syringes as well as test strips if you are using a human meter in Canada.
 
I’m in Ontario and you can go to any pharmacy here and ask for a sharps container, they will give you and empty one. Once it’s full just take it back and swap if for another empty container.
We get his syringes from the vet, we did try the human syringes but prefer the markings on the one from the vet. Not much difference in price luckily
 
I'm in B.C. and my vet special orders me "Sol-Vet U-40 insulin syringe with 1/2 unit markings" and charges me less then $40 for 100 needles.
& I just get a sharps bin from Walmart for free and when it's full bring it in and they replace with new one.
