Fiona's in the 30's and not eating the HC on her own (a first). Guess she had a big lunch, I was out. I syringed 3cc Karo, than ran to store to get gravy's lovers FF. Works great in syringe - btw. Got 10ccs in her. 10ccs isn't all the gravy. I'm going in for another round then gonna wait 10 min and see where she is. She was up to 38 w/the Karo after 20 min.

Never had to force feed her HC and wonder if anyone knows what the goal amount is?

Sharyn, I'm not sure if there is a goal amount, but rather enough to get her numbers rising. Keep giving her small amounts and test every 15 minutes. Maybe someone else with more experience in this area (I've never used the syringe) will give you a better idea. You're doing great.

hi Sharyn,

for Fiona, you might have to use a lot more gravy/karo than others. Just keep at it, syringe some gravy (you can mix karo in if she's not rising), test in 20 minutes, repeat if needed. Then test a few more times after that. What + hour is it?

Next time...you can mix the gravy with a drop or two of karo....oops....3 ccs of karo?
I use a strainer and get the gravy separated....in the 30s I would put a drop or two of karo in with the gravy.
I usually give him two syringes of about 2.5 ccs. then I retest in 15 minutes to see where he is.
Post the next BG test number in your header if you would, okay?

She's fine, up to 76. We're old pro's a pulling up her numbers, except for the syringe part. I got another 10'ish ccs of gravy into her. She didn't mind so much the gravy syringe as much as the karo. ;-) Normally, I give her 2-3 cans of HC, especially when she drops this early in the cycle. But I don't know how gravy lovers translates in to regular HC cans. It's obviously more. One can of regular HC would keep her numbers up for about an hour, 3 cans = 3 hours. She's usually a late nadir kitty, that seems to have changed a bit. Now she just makes me guess. We're at +7 now.

here's her ss (really gotta get that into my sig one of these days)

For those who don't know us, Fiona has IAA and is currently killing me at 20.5u being too much and 20.5 skinny not being enough. Seriously. She also has a shed the size of the Taj Mahal that will keep her in low number through the next cycle.

Everyone have a good turkey day?

I've found that Talbot, who dislikes HC, will eat if I mix karo into his food. I start with about a 1/4 tsp of karo mixed with about a tablespoon of food. But you may need more karo with Fiona since she's insulin resistant. I caught a surprising 34 today and he came up to 136 with the karo.

ooooh, I can relate to the monster shed. It's both a blessing and a curse. I've never had to syringe gravy either and I can imagine that after all this time, if she suddenly didn't want gravy that would be concerning. I think the gravy lovers have about the same carb % as regular HC, but there is a lot more gravy so maybe somehow it's diluted? I don't know.

A little clarification from my earlier post. I don't think the IAA itself necessarily means that a cat needs more gravy. For acro cats, the pancreas is functioning so food can drive the numbers down, meaning that they might need a ton of gravy to bring their numbers up. IAA cats, the best I understand, are more like regular diabetic cats in that the pancreas is probably not working. Food/carbs should react the same way as other diabetic cats. The reason the gravy needs might be more is simply that there is more insulin to overcome. Sharyn knows her cat really well and did exactly the right thing. I know Sharyn can set me straight if I'm not understanding correctly. Sharyn is my IAA hero.

Re: dose, it might be that temporarily going UP in dose like you did might have put her on a dose reduction path. Maybe this dose wasn't enough before, but it looks like it's too much right this minute. You might want to give a skinny 20.25u a try. She might even be ok on 20u now, but you do have to consider that some of today's action might have been leftover shed action from the 20.5. Micro dosing a high dose cat, fun, huh?

Hiya Sharyn and Ms. Balloonie! I see someone is up to tricks.

Sharyn - Harley & Pattie will be getting IAA results soon (this week)...hope you can check back on her. I think they did an IGF-1 test several months ago. Whatever the cause, Harley is definitely insulin-resistant.

Looks like you got it right to me, Libby. I'm more of an IAA slave. My vet calls me Spartacus. Hope Harley and Patti don't have to go down this road.

Turns out we'll get about 2+'ish hours off one can of gravy. She's back down to 33 (sigh). Still wouldn't eat the HC on her own. Something is definitely amiss with Princess Enigma. She wants to eat but can't bring herself to do so. We'll deal with that tomorrow. She gets Pecid injections every night, so I don't know why her tummy is upset. She ate earlier today, np. At least everything I'm putting in her is staying down. No shooting tonight. I'll figure out what dose to try tomorrow AM.

Good to see you guys! Got a kitten adopted tonight! yay!
