Peeper was diagnosed with diabetes about a year and a half ago. We did a few months of insulin and put him on an all wet food diet and his symptoms went away and his blood sugar was maintaining at around 100. So we weaned him off the insulin.

For a year he's been his old self. Lots of energy. Normal pee clumps in the litter box.

But a couple weeks ago that changed. He is very lethargic and the other day he was begging for water while I was at the sink. We stopped leaving a water dish out for him when we switched to wet food because he stopped drinking it. I assumed he got enough water from his food that he wasn't thirsty.

He drained that water dish when I put it out this time.

He's also peeing a lot more. The pee clumps aren't quite like the sticky, cement clumps when he was first diagnosed, but they are getting there.

So tonight I did a glucose test and it was 350.

I'll schedule a vet appointment tomorrow, but is there anything that might have caused him to come out of remission?

His food is mainly Fancy Feast Grilled Cheddar or Medleys. He can be a little picky, but the carb content is pretty comparable to his prescription food, only it's cheaper. And it's what I've fed him this whole time.

I’m sorry Peeper seems to have fallen out of remission. There is no guarantee when a cat goes into remission that he will stay in remission.
I think you will find the FF grilled cheddar and medley are not low carb foods. You should be feeding foods that are 10% or lower to a diabetic cat forever. He is going to always be a diabetic but when in remission, they are a diet controlled diabetic.
The prescription “diabetic “foods are not low carb foods so I would not feed them. I will give you a link to suitable foods in this FOOD CHART
Always leave plenty of water out for cats…even when on a wet diet.
Do you have a spreadsheet? If not I would E commend you set up a SS and add any data you might have.
And if you could set up your signature, which is very quick and easy, that will help us to help you.
Link to the SS and signature HELP US HELP YOU
What type of glucose meter are you using? And what insulin were you using before.? You can

The low carb fancy feast are the pates or the classic line. I would see if you can transition him to those. Were you home testing when he was diabetic? How did you ascertain he went into remission?

I was using Lantus Insulin Glargine and I tested him at home using an AlphaTRAK blood glucose monitoring system. I kept a hand written log of the tests, but I'll work on digitizing it.

I'll try getting him some of the lower carb foods on that list.

The formula I was using to the calculate carbs was this one. The Fancy Feast Cheddars calculated to be ~3.5% carbs. He just loves the cheddars though, and doesn't really like pate, and he's been eating them for the past year while maintaining a normal glucose level.

I did a search on our site and found this posted from one of our members
On the food chart take a look at Fancy Feast Roasted/Flaked /Chunky
They are not pates, some are 4, 5, or 6 % carbs
Chunky Chicken Feast - is 4% carbs.

See what's on the food chart, if some are fish flavors we suggest just feeding fish flavors only once a week because of mercury in them

The formula uses the GA values and we don’t because it’s a minimum or maximum but not the as served per can amount. Let me find the thread that explains it why GA is inaccurate.

Besides higher carb food than he should be eating, is he on any new medications? I'd get the vet to take a look inside his mouth too. Needing a dental (infection/inflammation) are one of the most common reasons cats come out of remission. There could also be some other condition causing the higher numbers. It would be good to get the vet to get a blood test done, as well as urinalysis.

No new medications. He does have a sore on his temple that looks pretty red that he's had for about a week. He's had a sore in that same place before, so I am concerned about that. It'll be one of the things I ask the vet about when I take him in.
