its been so long since i logged in, missed the form..

I have a question:

Nooni's lower nipple is becoming red and swollen, strong from inside and you can see some milk on the tip of it. as the vet tried milking it and it produce small amount of milk.

I took her to the vet and she gave her long acting antibiotic "augmentin " it did reduce the size of the nipple for a while but later on it became big again, as i had to travel for two months and just came back.

now the vet is suggesting a removal of that nipple. have to mention that Nooni is unspayed 14 years old female, with diabetes under control.

at earlier age she had the same problem and we had to remove two of her nipples.

my concern now is that as her age and with the diabetes thing, is it safe for her to have a surgery ? nailbite_smile

the size of the swollen under the nipple is about 2 inches.

thanks :)

I suspect not doing the surgery could be more risky, if there is infection or malignancy. Waiting in either of those situations could risk her life.

Would you consider having her spayed? By doing this, she won't produce milk any longer and my guess is that her nipples will shrink back to normal size.

She probably went through a heat cycle and her body was getting ready for babies.

Hi Aseel. It's been years. It's nice to see you. I'm sorry it's not on a happier occasion.
Right away I wondered if NoNitta was spayed. Your post just reminded me of a Samoyed dog I had once, that was unspayed and later in life, when she was about 12, she developed swollen breasts and had to have them all removed and we got her spayed at the same time. I wish The Best for NoNitta, please keep us updated. We can wish her complete and fast recovery vines. ((((Hugs to you))))

Dear Dyana, its always good to see your reply, hope you all in a good health ;-) been so long ..

in Noni's case i'm mostly worried about the healing time, as shes adiabatic and with people it takes so long and it can be risky, is it the same with felines ??? confused_cat

what i'm doing right now is clothes with hot water twice a day, but i can tell this wont really help as you can feel a strong thing under her skin.

I should have the courage and take her to the vet again next week for the sugary !

please pray for us

, as i will keep you updated.

Spaying is the best you can do for an animal, as unspayed and unneutered animals can get all kinds of medical problems, not to mention behavioral problems that spayed and neutered animals don't get.

i would talk with your vet about doing this routine procedure and taking the extra care for diabetes.

Vets do have special anesthetic protocols for older animals that they can follow.
Typically, food is withheld after the prior night's feeding.
Sometimes, a half dose of insulin may be given in the morning if tests say it is safe; otherwise you skip until afterwards.
It is really important to keep the kitty warm and hydrated during surgery.
Monitoring of glucose should be done and the vet prepared with both glucose and insulin solutions for possible iv use.

And spay surgery is much less invasive than doing a double chain mastectomy. We had a kitty with breast cancer and the surgery is severe.

thanks for the valuable information, i didn't have that in mind. i will ask the vet about the details of the dosage and during procedure issues that they should take care of

thanks a lot

How is NoNitta doing, Aseel?

Did you go to the vet? I hope she is feeling better, and I am sending her quick recovery and healing vines.

Hello Dyana, thanks for your concern ..

the surgery is to be on the 31, Wed .. my only worries is about Noni handling the anesthetics .. spoke with her vet she said it will be a small amount of anesthetic just to keep her able to wear the mask.

told her about the spaying thing, she said she will decide during the operation if its possible she will do it .

meanwhile i'm she gave her antibiotic

hope everything goes well.. i cant think of anything now but her .. i'm scared, worried about her . just posted a question in a new thread , please check it out for me ..
