Switching insulin?

Hey all, testing is going fine with Jade as expected, but the insulin prescribed to me (Pro-Zinc) isn’t available from the supplier anymore. I saw some of you mention this was a very uncommon type of insulin, so I’m not too surprised.

I really don’t ever want to go back to that previous vet for anything, so I thought to turn here. What would be a good insulin to switch to? And is there a way to get it without having a vet prescribe it? And what should I watch/prepare for if switching to a new kind? Thanks in advance everyone for your advice!

the consensus here is that Lantus is the best for cats but prozync isn’t bad. Lantus might be easier for you to get. Most of us order them from Marks Pharmacy in Canada as it’s about 1/4 of the cost here. You can get the prescription from your vet and email it to them

Matt if I were you I would go right to the supply closet here, Panic's kitty passed and she is selling 3 lantus pens for 50.00 can't beat that price plus the expiration date is Jan 2022

For 3 pens that she is selling for 50 dollars is a great deal and the expiration date is Jan 2022 That means as long as you don't use the other 2 pens they are good until the expiration date, keep them all in the fridge. Depending on the dose you will be giving they can still be potent for 4 months, Don't shoot using the pen, because using the pen you can only increase by full units go out and buy U-100 syringes with half unit marking's, make sure they say that. When using the syringes we usually increase or decrease by 0.25 units, you would takethe top off of the pen and there is a rubber stopper , that is where you draw the insulin from using the syringes
I know Walmart sells the Relion syringes but if you go there make sure you look at the box and they say half unit markings on it, you I'll also need to buy lancets 26 or 28 gughe to start with
You can order from ADW Diabetes buy with this virus they will take longer for you to get them

They're also available at WalMart if you have one near you. Their Relion brand 3/10ml, 30 or 31 gauge, 6mm or 8mm insulin syringes all come with half unit markings and are only $12.58 for a box of 100 (although a lot of them don't realize they do come with half unit markings!)

If you want to buy from Marks Marine Pharmacy in Canada you would need a script from the vet
Lantus Solostar PENS 5x3ml per box (temp. gauge. ice pack, express-air mail) Brand 100u/ml 15 ml $164.99 USD Take a look at their web site for all the info

I have bought from the supply closet twice no problem

Thanks for the tip about the pens. I’ll look into it for sure depending on shipping cost. I guess I should have mentioned this before, but I’ve been using insulin on her with the syringes and the recently bought bg tester with lancets. So I’ve got everything needed now (except the insulin, which I have 1/3rd bottle still, but want to be proactive), but I appreciate all the advice nonetheless! Thanks!

EDIT: Just saw your post, too bad about the pens. I’ll look into over the counter Lantus insulin.

Just saw she just sold the pens

In Canada, you can get Lantus locally and do not need a prescription. Lantus here is much cheaper than in the U.S. Just tell the pharmacist that the Lantus is for a cat. Only diabetic humans require a prescription (cats, of course, being the superior creatures).

Well that solves that problem. Y’all are seriously the best. Thanks everyone!
