Would this be advisable considering the massively decreased costs as well as we might be getting to a point after switching food to not necessarily needing insulin?

Does anyone have experience to how different the readings usually fall between pet-specific and human meters?

A ReliOn meter is reliable and cheap and a lot of people use them here.
Even if you are lucky enough to get your kitty off insulin, you will need to keep monitoring the BGs for life, although not as frequently as you are at the moment.
The pet meter reads higher than the human meter. Our dosing methods are based on the human meter.
I would recommend you swap

I did this switch between those two meters. The Relion needs more blood sample (0.5 vs. 0.3) so you will need to make sure you have a bigger drop of blood for the Relion. Also, the "timeout" time from when you put the strip into the meter before it times out and turns off seems to be shorter in the Relion. Both of those differences have taken getting used to. The numbers difference, for me, are quite large (we are talking pet meter to human meter so that is to be expected). A comparison I did a few days ago (just because) was 255 on Pettest and 165 on the Relion. Since most people here use and reference the values and ranges in human meters and the Pettest strips are more expensive I am going with the Relion. With that said, the Relion seems more picky, I get errors more often and with the timeout being so quick and the increased blood sample I am doing so grudgingly.

So I ended up purchasing a Contour Next ONE meter from Wal-Mart. Online, it says they're within 8% of lab tests so I'm fine with that margin.

Strips are literally half the cost which means I can do curves or just daily monitoring for much less. I'm happy about that. Thank you guys again for the great info. :)
