Switching Fred to Lantus

After reading this board and talking with my vet, I'm about to switch to Lantus from Humulin. It's about 4 times as expensive as Humulin! (No wonder my vet started Fred with Humulin -- I rescue and have a lot of cats and not a lot of money, which she's very sensitive to.) Than I saw the post about how the pens are more cost effective, so I'll ask for a prescription for the pens instead. But I wonder why you can keep using the pens until they're empty, but not the vials?

Thanks,
Ginger & Fred

first, to help with $$, go to this website and see the link for the $25 coupon?

the pens have 300 units in each one versus 1000 units in a vial. thus, you will more than likely use up the 300 units before it goes bad whereas when it's packaged in a big vial of 1000 units, the insulin can go bad, weaken, get contaminated, etc..... well before you come close to using the whole 1000 units. make sense?

how about this, i used to buy milk by the gallon. welllll, when we discovered that dairy causes my fiance to snore, he cut back on how much milk he drank in the evenings. thus, we found that the milk was going bad before we could drink it all and we were pouring money down the drain. sooooo, i stopped buying gallons and switched to buying quarts and we don't throw milk away very often anymore due to spoiling.

Great to see a new Lantus sista! If you have dosing questions, hop on over to the Lantus ISG. It's been a great experience learning from those who have alot more experience than me.

I hope you have gotten over the sticker shock! When Cedric as diagnosed and I was given a script for lantus I called the three closests pharmacies nearest to me and the $120 for a 10ml bottle was like "What?!" Well, Cedric used it for a month and doesn't need it now, so while $120 is a bit of bucks for me (as I like to say, I don't work 2 jobs 7 days a week 'cause I got nothin to do w/my time - lol), I didn't want to waste it and gave it to a friend with a diabetic cat who doesn't work as much as I do, etc. When the time comes 9someday) that Cedric has to go back on insulin, I'll be asking Dr. Josh for a script for lantus in pens. Yes, it's twice as much, but I am getting more and it will last longer.

Good luck with your boy! cat_pet_icon
