Switching cat liter

We have always used Tidy Cat's cat liter. Last week we made the switch over to Tidy Cats scooping cat liter. Mocha took to the change just fine, but twix didn't. Last night since Tuesday morning was the first time she peed in the box. But we found her poop outside of it, on the linoleum. Twix is a VERY stubborn cat who does NOT like change at all. She has never once had an accident outside of the box.

Should we go back to the old clay liter or should we give her more time with the new stuff?

Does anyone have any transitioning tips?

Go back to the old litter.

Then, start the switch-over just like you would switch food.

Put 10-25% "new" mixed into the "old" litter and gradually increase the
percentage until you are using 100% new litter.

This could take several weeks.

You could also sprinkle a bit of Dr. Elsies Cat Attract Litter on top
of the mixture to encourage use.

Ok, thanks .. I thought maybe that is what we should have done but it seemed crazy to spend that much in cat liter. Guess we know better now!

Devon, cats are notoriously fussy about their litter preferences. Checkers won't use the corn or wheat based litters, ya know World's Best, or SweetWheat. I wanted to get away from the heavy clay stuff.
I don't know if he would go on the floor, as I've always had 2 or 3 boxes, with both kinds for him to choose from. He always chooses the clay scoopable.
I use Cat's Pride now, 'cause it's less expensive, and they have an unscented one. I hate perfumey litter.

This tidy cat's scoopable cat liter smells strong to me .. so I can only imagine how it would smell to the cats!

I wondered if twix was going to have a problem with us switching the liters over .. she is soooooo set in her ways .. but I didn't really believe that she would go outside the box since she never has in the past ..

Guess she taught us!

I keep trying to get away from the heavy clay litter too, but mine refuse anything but scoopable clay, so we tried the Tidy Cat scoopable, they hated the smell and it gave me sneezing fits. The best one that I have found for no scent and that everyone here can agree on is Wal-marts Special Kitty unscented in the green box. It is a little dustier than I would like, but other than that I can't complain about it, it clumps well, controls the odor of 12 cats and doesn't leave my wallet screaming, and best of all .....They all will use it!

Hmm ... maybe we will try the special kitty litter .. The tidy cat's scoopable litter was just over 12.00 .. they stopped carrying the size tidy cat's we had been using which means we'd have to get it at the other grocery store which runs nearly 7.00 a bag .. I didn't really want to spend that much on litter in one week .. I don't know if it was the smell that caused twix not to use it or just the "texture" of the new sand .. she is just so set in her ways ..

The Special Kitty scoopable runs us about $7 for 28lbs as opposed to between $12 for 35lbs of the Tidy Cat. And I can so relate to cats that are stuck in their ways...lol. With all our litter boxes I really wish my kids would switch to something that didn't try to break mom's back when she hauls it in from the truck, but alas they are determined to make sure I stay in shape hauling cans of cat food and heavy boxes of litter...lol

hahaha ..

We bought the 35 pound bucket of tidy cats for $12 something .. we split it between two boxes with none leftover to add in when we take out the clumps .. but I think I will be going to town tomorrow and getting the other tidy cats, see if mixing it up for awhile helps twix ..

Just to warn you, the old box will get smelly and gross and you'll want to clean it--but resist the urge until both cats are pooping and peeing in the new box with the clumping litter. Bandit held out on pooping in the new box WAY longer than the peeing--he peed in it the second night it was there, but wouldn't poop in it for a week and a half! I'd also recommend picking up some of this: http://www.febreze.com/en_US/producttype/febreze_air_effects.do

:-D

 We love febreeze!

I was surprised twix held out on peeing as long as she did .. but even more shocked she had a BM on the floor .. But we'll try doing the switch like stated in the steps above and see if we are successful!

Yes, I love the linen and sky scent too .. you know why? It smells like I did laundry all day when I hadn't
