Hello,

I have a question. I just switched my China for N to Lantus insulin. How long does it take before I will see results? She has gotten three injections of it so far 2.0 u and the numbers are not going down much. It seems her numbers were better on N. Do I need to increase the dosage to get her under better control or just give it more time? Please any advice is appreciated. My SD should be at bottom.

Thanks vickie

I'm not too familiar with lantus but from my understanding of other posts it takes a few days for lantus to build up in the system since it's a depot insulin

The following notes are some basics of starting out on Lantus. Some are specific to the Tight Regulation protocol which works to get the cat into near normal glucose numbers.

You need 5-7 full days on the initial dose to evaluate how well it is doing.
After that, you need at a minimum, 3-5 days to evaluate how later doses are doing.

Dose increases are based on the nadir, the lowest number after a shot, usually between +5 to +7 hours after the shot.
If you get a mid-cycle test below 50 mg/dL, that earns a dose reduction of 0.25 units.

Just starting out on Lantus, we suggest you not shoot below 200 mg/dL until you have a good week or so of mid-cycle data to show how low the glucose goes.
If you get a number too low to shoot, stall 30 minutes without feeding and re-test.
Then you may slowly lower that no shot number to 150 mg/dL, as each week of mid-cycle data shows it is safe.
