Hello there!
I'm hopping on and just saw Sienne's response to my Friday's post about Sushi's diarrhea-a-thon:
Sienne and Gabby said:
I would order FortiFlora. The only place I've ever gotten it is at the vet's office (where they overcharge) or on-line -- Amazon, Entirely Pets, etc. Any probiotic will help with diarrhea. If you're near a Whole Foods, you can see if they have ReNew Ultimate in the refrigerated supplements section. (You use about 1/3 of a capsule twice a day.) Some people have used plain, unsweetened yogurt with live cultures to help with diarrhea, as well.

I'd also see about giving a different food just in case you have a bad batch of food. Check to see if you've been feeding from the same lot of food. If so, switch to a different lot and see if the problem clears up.

With Sushi's dose, I suspect the pens will be more economical.
Thank you SO much Sienne! As usual, what great, valuable information. I do have access to a Whole Foods, so I'll be running over there as soon as Sushi's numbers even out.

Sushi's diarrhea is to the point now where I'm worried. I think it's safe to say I've spent 1/8 of my weekend cleaning up (and walking thru; ugh!) patches of diarrhea. I feed his sister the same food, and she is fine, so I'm thinking I can rule food out as the culprit; is that safe to say? I was assuming it was due to the high carb food I left out for him Monday, but would it still be causing trouble at this point?

I gave him some plain (nonfat) yogurt late last night around 11 or 12. I also added Metamucil to his food twice yesterday and this morning. I haven't seen any improvement yet.

Sushi's not crazy about the Metamucil, so he's not eating as well. This has caused him to drop to 50! Talk about a domino effect!
I'm scared giving him more high carb food will upset his stomach even more.

I thought his high numbers were due to the insulin pooping out (either way, it is time to get new insulin), but maybe not? Any thoughts there?
Could old insulin be the cause of Sushi's upset stomach?

Ahhh!!! nailbite_smile

I have a thought.
Unless they have changed the formula, Metamucil is just high fiber to make you go. I don't remember any qualities in it for dealing with diarrhea.
That could be why she's still having problems.
Go read your label and see what it says.
I have a cannister of it that's been in our house for 20 years I think.... so maybe something has changed but my great grandmother used that all her life for the opposite problem.

Hope you can get to Whole foods soon and Sushi's numbers rise so you can get something better that will help stop the diarrhea.

Metamucil is a bulk-producing laxative and fiber supplement.

It hasn't changed. It's still a laxative.
That may take a while to play out of her system. Maybe someone has a suggestion as to what to feed him to help him get past the laxative effect.

I've never heard of anyone using Metamucil with their cat. It doesn't mean it can't be done but most people here will use pumpkin to increase fiber.

I would make an appt. with your vet tomorrow. When Gabby had a bad bout of diarrhea, the vet prescribed metronidazole (Flagyl) which was helpful.

Thanks for these responses! I just got an email notification so I'm just seeing them. My vet recommended Metamucil for my civvie cat that was throwing up a lot, so I suppose I'm aquatinted with giving it to kitties. And a doctor of mine recommended it to me for dealing with my IBS. I was confused by that, but I have found that adding a fiber suppliment to my diet has helped dramatically with these oh so fun issues. So that's why I tried some Metamucil with Sushi.

I'm glad it's safe for cats! The problem with fiber products is that they can be used either as a laxative or for diarrhea. If you started using it and Sushi's poo problems have gotten worse, I'd stop using it and see if things improve. In the meantime, a probiotic like FortiFlora or the ReNew Ultimate that I linked previously can't hurt.
