No worries Jerry the Happy Cat is still OTJ but on memorial day I did FINALLY learn more of his past! For those of you who were along for his ride I thought you may appreciate it.
I told his introductory story but a basic refresher is Jerry ended up in my husband's care as a temporary home that became permanent. He didn't know much of where he came from or his story but based on what he was told and did remember Jerry had been 10 when diagnosed and would be around 11 years old now.
Jerry's story:
It's a kind of hard chain to link but Jerry is my husband's friend's wife's mom's cat and I finally got to meet the wife for a memorial day cookout. Jerry was adopted with his brother named Dicky and lived with a dog as well. The original owners don't live in the area anymore I'm not sure if it was their move away or a move within the area but at one point they moved and Jerry was terribly unhappy and couldn't recover so they rehomed him to their daughter. The daughter took him in but had to rehome him as well due to having a very large dog who wasn't so fond of him. The person set to take him in fell through so he went from temporarily being with my husband to permanently.
Ready for the shocking part guys???
My math was dead on but the daughter was off on her guess. Jerry isn't 11 years old - Jerry is 14 years old!!! OMG!
I''ll have to update his signature but I'm in shock over that. He's such a happy boy and he looks amazing, I think especially so for his age. I'm more proud than I've ever been over how well he took the treatment and is still handling his testing.
The sad part of this story is his brother Dicky apparently passed away years ago - I don't recall from what but it wasn't diabetes.
The happiest part of this story is all the lives that were lightened up this memorial day.
One of the sisters had a cat who had feline diabetes before who didn't pull through so I got to share my story of Lantus (human insulin) versus cat/pet insulin with higher remission results, our experience, DCIN saving his life, and you guys as his fellow guardian angels. I don't know if they still sell them here or not (I know they had been running low) but I have my support bracelet from this site, the baby blue with FelineDiabetes.com blue lettering. I never take it off even to this day, I support him and all of you.
My husband's friend not being a cat fan never even told his wife Jerry was a diabetic. She was so pleased that not only was he here with us accepted as his permanent home but that I did save his life and never take off that support bracelet in his honor.
She knows he's in a great place and her mom, the actual original owner, called during the cookout ironically. I'm sad to hear about his brother but happy that Jerry is still around. An unexpected twist that the unhappy rehomed one is the one who managed to stick around longer and be the happiest cat ever. For me it's hard to imagine him as unhappy, but this does have the happiest ending.
Everyone is beaming from the news and of course wants photos - it'll be hard to recognize him since they asked if he's still fat (totally not) but he's still himself. I would SO love to see a picture of him as a kitten but who knows after so much time he's a Y2K kitty!!!
The owner has closure and knows that he's loved and years after his brother's passing is still here. The sisters are thrilled. I've passed on my knowledge and experience.
AND, on an unrelated but also happy note. My friend's cat had escaped Friday she was so heartbroken and we had spent hours looking for him. Her mom found him Monday night! What an amazing day for cats - a memorial day I'll remember forever!
PS - 14 years old!!! WOWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
