Supplements ok ?

Hello, I'm new here. My darling Tuxedo was diagnosed 2 weeks ago. He is 14 years old. He is now on 1 unit BID of Caninsulin. I am doing home testing, despite his protests. He is eating strictly canned food (Medi-Cal Royal Canin Reducing Formula). Anyhow, I have been adding omega fish oil to his food for the last couple of years. Is this ok now? I also give him a glucosamine supplement - but I stopped it now, just in case it would affect his #s. Do you think it is safe to add these 2 supplements back into his diet? Thank you!

Those two supplements should not have an effect on his glucose. The fish oil should actually help the diabetes by decreasing inflammation in the pancreas.

The food that you mention - I am not familiar with it. Is it a diabetic diet? Low in carbs?

I haven't heard that about the fish oil, Kelly. I may have to add that to my cats' food.

Here are the stats on the food though:

That food looks to be a little higher in carbs than you would want. All the ingredients Patrick highlighted are ones you want to avoid because of the carb content of them.

There have been a few studies in humans about the benefits of fish oil for diabetics. Mostly its anti-inflammatory properties. A little extra omega 3s are good for any kitty though. It usually takes about a month before you will see a difference in their fur, or dandruff (if they have that problem). I used to squeeze 2 1000mg capsule between three bowls for my 3 kitties. I stopped since I started making my own food since I add that in there when it is made.

Thank you, I will look into switching the canned food. He has been on that food for a number of years. It's the only high quality canned food that he will eat. I am considering home cooking or raw for him. I will continue the fish oil. He is doing ok, but he sure looks OLD all of the sudden - makes me so sad.
