SUNDAY UPDATE ON MURPHY :?

Hi all. I'm trying to be preventative and also cautious, but I broke down b/c Murphy just stopped eating wet food. She does in fact have a heart gallop, but after what I've read, it can also come from a deficiency in taurine in a cat's diet, which would make sense since she nearly starved to death with the sitter while I was hospitalized. Anyways, I'm here b/c I had to break down and give her dry food, and left a little out last night and this morning, as I was waking up, she was booting Oscie away from the dish to get her own. I just checked her BG and it was 146. Any ideas on how I can handle this would be greatly appreciated. She does seem to have a little more energy since I gave her the two servings of dry food. Could it be that it is in fact a taurine deficiency?

The other thing is that she did have hock in her back legs. What is in her front legs is severe muscle and ligament damage from all of the jumping up and down when she was overweight b/4 her Dx of diabetes. If the Cushings did come prior to the diabetes, and the Cushings has subsided due to the decrease in her Flovent, then maybe it is possible that I can keep her on some dry food.

Or, I need to take her to see a cat therapist! She seems to want to eat a little wet but I have to put her little freeze-dried duck treats b/4 she will even attempt it.

And, the other important thing is that she gets her panakare still, along with the Cosequin and acetyl l-carnitine. How am I supposed to give this to her?

I'm truly at a loss, but I'm here b/c this is tricky business for her and the risk of becoming diabetic to me, is REAL, don't you agree?

Any suggestions on any of this would be helpful.

Oh my goodness I have NO input/experience on these conditions but please dont EVER leave Miss Murphys side again. (I know it wasnt your choice) She obviously NEEDS her mommy. Sorry dont mean to make fun. You have some serious decisions to make with her, I SO hope someone here can help you with them. All I can offer is prayers. Miss Murphy has found her way into my heart and I send prayers for her daily.
All my best,
jeanne

With so many things going on, it's really hard to know what to do, isn't it? In my opinion, getting Miss Murphy eating regularly is important. I haven't been following everything here. I remember she stopped eating while you were in the hospital, right? And she was overdosed on Flovent? Have you tried other canned foods?

It may be that you need to feed dry, at least for now. Maybe after she starts eating a normal amount on her own you can transition her back to canned. Will she eat the lower carb dry, like EVO or wellness CORE?

Having a cat who will not eat is very upsetting. Good luck with her.

Lisa,
Like Debbie said, can you try one of the couple of dry foods that is under 10% carbs? EVO cat and kitten is listed at 8%, and the Wellness core is 11%. There's also Nature's Variety Raw Instinct at 7%. Will she eat the dry if it isn't "dry", like if you mix water into it? Sort of home-made tender vittles". I'm asking because then you might be able to add the cosequin and the others (which I assume are all powders?) into the mixture and she'd still get them.

I had to syringe feed her this afternoon, and it was easier than it was the first time (at least for me), but not for her. I got probably a little less than 1/2 can of Wellness grain free in her tummy. I did leave some Wellness dry out last night, and when I woke up this a.m., she and Oscie were at the food bowl and she actually butted him out of the food, which I thought was a good sign.

There's so many things: (1) the UTI never totally went away, even though she is urinating; (2) the heart gallop has caused her to not eat; (3) her last blood panel b/4 I came home showed her thyroid at 3.8, which is at the high end (hyperthyroid), but in that case, she would be eating lots. 4 is the top of the panel for thyroid for being hyperthyroid; (4) the iatrogenic Cushings, although somewhat resolved from the reduction in Flovent could have caused an adrenal tumor (maybe); or CRF. If you read on overuse of Ventolin for asthma, it does contain information on heart gallop! Anything could have happened while I was in the hospital, but what I do know is that she was totally normal the day b/4 I fell.

I've never had to deal with so many issues all at once, and if it is heart related, then I need to watch how much sub q's I give her so we don't end up with a congestive situation.

Does Wellness grain free dry have a ton of carbs in it? Did someone say Evo cat and kitten dry?

Evo dry is 7-8% carb. Not bad-but it does have a longer effect on blood sugar than wet with the same carbs.

Is it just called "Evo" dry? Okay, so here's the deal. I had to give Murphy a cipro to see if her appetite would increase and had left the dry food down and sure enough, she had probably about 1/2 cup. I feel bad that I'm reaching out to all of you, but any one of these things could put her back into diabetes and I don't want that, so if I'm asking for help, I know you will understand where I am coming from.

How on earth am I going to give her the Panakare? I suppose just sprinkle it on top of the dry food? Oscie has to eat it as well. But, the good news is she wants at least dry food.

Honestly, I believe, aside from the heart gallop, that she has had a mental break from the wet food because of the person who took care of her. After all, she nearly starved Murphy -- losing 4 pounds in a little less than two months is quite unrealistic for a kitty cat. Murphy looked emaciated. And, this is where the heart gallop could have come into play. She certainly didn't have it the day before I fell when she was examined.

So, I'm looking for Evo dry food? Any other suggestions?

EVO
Turkey & Chicken Formula Dry Cat and Kitten Food
OR Herring & Salmon Formula Dry Cat Food

It's on the pricey side. Their website http://www.evopet.com has a store locator. I had to do some searching to find it for Cassie (who's now successfully on wet).

Wellness Core is listed at 11% carbs
Nature's Variety Raw Instinct at 7%

No experience with these, but they're other options.

Murphy has successfully eaten dry food. I believe I may be looking at a psychological situation with the wet food from her old sitter while I was in the hospital. But, something else is going on because she doesn't even want me to lift her, so between the heart and her severe arthritis, I will hopefully find out today what we can do to at least minimize some of her discomfort.

This is a real mess, I tell you all. Who would have ever thought that being away for two months would do something like this, but then again, Murphy and I have a different bond that is very very deep, so yes, I can see how she would be severely affected by this, but is there a turnaround?

The dry food I don't want to continue though. I cannot have her end up with diabetes again.

I'll let you all know what transpires at the vet's office today.

Lisa (thanks for all of your support)
