Hello everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself to your Forum. I am Mary and Sumo is my diabetic Kitty who was diagnosed 8 weeks ago. We have never gotten good results with Pro Zinc and my Vet really wanted me to switch to Lantus, stating she sees better controlled BG's and remissions with Lantus. She is a new Vet for us and we were impressed with her knowledge of the FDMB and Binky's food list. She is on board with home testing and really went the extra mile when Sumo developed hind leg Neuropathy 2 weeks ago. We started Lantus on Fri Eve (11/11/11) Her recommended dose was 1 unit twice daily. She felt strongly about sticking with the 1 unit for 1 week for cats changing from one insulin to another. She said get daily AMPS and PMPS but no curve for one week to allow him to stabilize. His readings have all been in the mid 300's which is an improvment from Pro Zinc. If anyone has time to take a look at his SS, tomorrow will be the last day for his 1 unit. I know he needs an increase, but I am unsure on the adjustment since we are new guys here. I will consult with his Vet as well, but feel much more comfortable with the boards recommendations.
Thank You,
Mary and Sumo

PS next curve opportunity Sunday 11/20/11

Welcome to Lantus Land!

It's great that you've found a vet that is supportive!

The biggest difference between Lantus and shorter acting types of insulin is that dosing is based on the nadir, not on pre-shot numbers. This being the case, I'd encourage you to get a test or two this evening and a few spot checks tomorrow. Without the spot checks, you won't have data upon which to make a decision regarding a dose change. We recommend that you always get pre-shot tests to make sure that giving an insulin dose is safe and that you get at the very minimum, one test in both the AM and PM cycles. Most of us test more than that.

I'd also encourage you to read the starred, sticky notes at the top of the board. They contain a great deal of information about how to care for Lantus, the Tight Regulation Protocol which is what we use for dosing, key concepts such as the depot or "shed," and general information to help you become comfortable with this board.
