suggestions for glucometers?

If you're in the US, the one most of us use is the Relion Confirm or Micro from WalMart.

They take the tiniest sample size and the strips are affordable ($35.88/100)….and you can get them 24/7 if you need them

Is .3 vs. .5 microliters needed to test really a concern when it comes to getting enough blood to test with, I have been researching all things "Cat Diabetes" since I found out my Princess has it Friday, and a ton of cat people suggest (and comparison writeups recommend highly) the Relion "Confirm" and I am almost sold, but the test strips for most .3 microliters systems are nearly twice the cost of .5 microliters test strips. Yes its only $12-15 dollars or more a month in test strip consumables, but it all adds up, happy to pay it if its better for my Princess, but hate to if its not really necessary. Probably just depends on how our cats bleed when pricked with the lancet. Wanting to get everything today to get her started on test daily so we both can get comfortable with it. (her first insulin is on order and arriving Tuesday)

If cost is an issue, I'd still recommend the Confirm or Micro at least at first.

As you poke more and more, new capillaries will grow in and it becomes easier to get that blood drop, so once the ears "learn to bleed", you could go to the Prime for the cheaper strips and keep the Confirm/Micro for a backup meter (it's always good to have a backup anyway in case your current meter's battery dies at a bad time or you drop it and break something. I've even heard someone here accidentally put their meter in the microwave instead of the rice sock ;)...names withheld to protect the innocent...LOL

SOLD....... That makes sense, I will get "Relion Confirm" tomorrow, Spent hours finding other .3 test sampling monitors and researching their consumables and nothing beats its. (well found one but it had terrible glucose accuracy and was more accurate with Ketone) and later having a spare makes sense if I find I can go to .5 test samples easily. - MANY THANKS !!!!!

I love my alphatrak 2 because it's easy, takes a small sample and is a pet specific meter so it's the same one my vet uses. The only downside of it is that the strips are expensive at about $46 for 50 of them. If the cost is not prohibitive this would be my first choice.

Most on here opt for a human meter such as the relion micro or confirm meter from Walmart. The benefit being 100 strips are about $35. Still easy to use and takes a small sample.

I use the Relion Prime, which needs a larger blood sample than the Confirm or the Micro. I do okay with it now but, when I first started testing Cleo, I sometimes had trouble getting a blood drop that was large enough for the Prime. If I had to do it over, I think I'd start out with the Confirm and maybe switch to the Prime after Cleo learned to bleed and I got better at testing her.

Folks, my local walmart does not have the RElion Confirm or the other one in stock. It will take a week for it to get to me. Is there one you would recommend that can be purchased at a Walgreens or a CVS?

You may be able to order the ReliOn and have it shipped to you direct and get it sooner (2 day free shipping on orders over $35). I use this one
