for these 2 new cats I hope to get soon. They are on dry now. I know I have to slowly wean them off. They are not diabetic now. I want to find a top quality canned food that will hopefully prevent this from happening. Do I get grain free? Donna

grain free will not hurt but I think most use that if there is a possibility of allergies or GI problems. not sure of what top of line is since I cannot afford that but i think wellness, merrick, sophisticat. there may be others.
i expect lots of pics of your new babies

I will also add in that neither one of my cats liked the wellness brands we got them .. they both enjoyed FF even though those are not considered top brand (probably why they like them so much) Now mocha is currently on wal mart brand special kitty (probably the worst out there) but she likes it, it's low carb @ 3%, and it fits into our budget ..

The "best quality" food is the one that your cats will eat and you can afford and can find in the stores  Grain-free is ideal since cats don't need grains in the diet. I feed Nature's Variety Instinct canned to my civies. They eat mainly Nature's Variety raw.

How about a mix? Friskies, 9 Lives or Fancy Feast mixed with Merrick's Cowboy Cookout, or Wellness, or Evo. That way, neither of them gets fixated on one food taste.

I agree with Squeem3, I feed mainly Nature's Variety Raw & Nature's Variety Instinct canned. "You are what you eat" like humans, furbabies should be on the best possible diet. There are a lot of quality foods & it does take time to get some cats to eat them, patience & persistence pays off ;-)

My toothless cat I fed Wellness and Natural Balance (which is high in carbs from my understanding). Sometimes he'd get bored with Wellness so we'd switch it up. He was on this for over a year in a half before he passed away.

My diabetic likes the Wellness and my other cats are excited simply because they don't normally get wet food but it also depends on the flavor. I do have one cat that refuses all wet food no matter the price or quality. I feel like "junk" food is easier to get them to eat because it's like McDonald's french fries to us.

Quality though is certainly Wellness, Evo, Before Grain, etc.

donna, i agree w/ karen
Winnie and Wolfie liked Merricks -- Grammy's, Turducken, and Thanksgiving Day dinner.
Also They also enjoyed Wellness Chicken and Turkey flavors, and Wellness Core (canned) Chicken.

Of course the favs which I saved for bad appy days were FF classics.-- mostly turkey giblets flavor and chicken liver.

Winnie was allergic to fish, so we steered clear of those. ( even some of the FF flavors that are marked chicken also have fish in them )

Best wishes to you and your new family members. I'm sure you will be able to transition them over time to a food that is best for them AND YOU !!

Blue Buffalo has a variety of canned that is gluten free and grain free. I fed this to Nomad when he was first diagnosed. The trouble was my seven other cats at the time also liked it too much and would fight him for it. I now have ten kitties and my bunch goes thru at least eight to ten cans a day. Unless I win the lottery, the blue buffalo is special treat only. I now go with friskies or nine lives pate varieties

Since you only have two cats feeding the more top line grain free might be within your budget.
