Hi~I changed to Swheat cat litter which is not working for me since it is leaving my house with a smell that I noticed i did not have with Scoop Away type brands. However, I am concerned with chemicals in these brands and was wondering what other brands you all would suggest that does not leave a smell.
Thanks

I really recommend Dr Elsey's cat litter. I use the blue multicat formua. My cats strongly preferred the Dr. Elsey's over Swheat Scoop - they'd use a dirty Dr E box over a freshly changed Swheat scoop box. My cats didn't like Worlds Best Cat Litter at all.

I really like the Dr E because there is far less dust than any other brand I've used. It clumps very nicely. There's a rebate form so you can try it for free. They also have some sprinkle herbsto draw in litter aversive cats. Cats love it, in fact I have several that love to sleep in the freshly changed/sprinkled litter box. The site says the herbs are only available at a vet, but I bought mine at Petsmart.

Please see my Litter Box page linked below.

Dr. Elsey's is also my first choice.

Whatever you decide, please make sure that it is a CLUMPING litter for all of the sanitation reasons outlined on my website. (You can completely remove the feces AND URINE...unlike with non-clumping litters.)

This is often a hotly-debated subject with strong opinions in all camps but my...strong opinion...is that non-clumping litters are unsanitary. I deal with a lot of inappropriate elimination cases in my consulting work and, by far, the number one reason is a dirty litter box......with the problem often fixed when the cat is given an UNscented clumping litter....that is scooped a *minimum* of twice daily.

I also have dealt with a lot of cats that will not use pelleted litters and even if they will use them....the human often allows the cat to continue to walk through urine-soaked pellets that turn into sawdust or newspaper yuck.....which is not very fair to the cat which is a fastidious creature, by nature.

Thanks for all your advise,
Went to Pet Smart and bought the regular Dr. Elsey (blue bag) and my what a difference a little bit of cat litter can do... I cleaned everything and Skippy jumped into it with no hesitation. The Sweat went to the bottom and stayed there and got sticky which is why the oder. I am loving this stuff.

There is a new one out that looks like crystals from Dr. Elsey for older cats and it claims that it prevent urinary tract etc. Do you suggest this one as well.
Thank a million you guys are the best !!!!!! :dizcat

wow I was just reading yesterday and this morning Lisa DVM's link regarding the litter..well everything in fact.
I have had an issue with peeing on my couches for as long as I can remember and to date have thrown out all my furniture-not just due to urine but other issue (ringworm with 6 cats- I ditched anything that would hold that fungus-even my shower curtain). Now my couch is covered in plastic and quite frankly I hate it. I have newer furniture coming in friday and I'm going to try the Dr. E's litter along with leaving the old type in the current boxes so the cats are switched cold turkey. I will be placing different boxes (based on her recommendations) -using storage containers in the living room. I will over litter box my living room but really I am so sick of the peeing. My diabetic cat has 3 different boxes in his room. If he is left out during the day and tries to go to the covered boxes (that are deeper) he pees OUTSIDE the box so for him I'll have a lower uncovered box in the living room. Really if this approach doesn't cut it I will be scheduling a consultation with Dr. Lisa P. I also plan on following the cleaning recommendations. I just am so sick of a stinky house - I love my cats but do not want my house smelly and hate being embarrassed if anyone comes over- as well as having no living room. Currently I'm using Tidy cat which is probably one the reasons for the stink. All my cats urine has been checked several times at the vet for medical issues. It is behavioral-the ones peeing on the couch at least.. and the peeing is ONLY in the corner of the couch!

I don't blame you...and it amazes me what people will put up with in terms of letting cats ruin their homes...and lives....with their urine.

Be sure to think about using the Dr. E's Cat Attract product if the regular Dr. E's does not work. CA has saved many homes and....the lives of many cats that would have otherwise been euthanized or turned into a shelter (pretty much the same as being euthanized...) for IE (inappropriate elimination) issues.

Sometimes I hesitate using the "IE" term since in many cases it IS appropriate for them to pee elsewhere since many people do not:

1) keep the boxes clean enough!!

2) offer the cat(s) a normal substrate to dig and bury their waste in

There's a coupon for Cat Attract in the Supply Closet :thumbup

I have put up with a lot. Much of my family thinks I'm nuts and now I'm beginning to agree the cats are running my house. I will NOT give up. I will follow the recommendations and keep everyone updated. My biggest wish was to have someone come into my home and tell me what I have been doing wrong. I have tried many things and just became complacent - I guess but lately something has gotten to me. I no longer will be. I couldn't afford to be with KHAN (my diabetic cat) and that turned out great! The clinic will most likely be changing their cat diabetic protocol!! That is 3 vets!!! which means many cats saved!! one of the vets is mine and he is looking at this webpage and learning. So it is with the urine, litter boxes etc.. I will change my ways and give it a full out try. I have newer furniture coming in on friday night..I'm very very nervous about it. The smell of urine just does ever go away once a cat pees on a couch.

This is so true and is why I have to laugh when I hear of people stating that they got rid of the smell with this product or that product. They may have helped the odor situation for *their* noses but the cat will always smell the urine.

Cat pee is like herpes....it is 'forever'.

For what it's worth Hartz make an inexpensive, ph neutral, clay litter that seems chemical free also, some store brands (I use Piggly Wiggly) are basic clay litter and not expensive.

Second day and I went down this morning to get the urine and poop and Dr' Elseys product is awesome. The urine clumped without leaving a residue on the popper scooper and the everything is clean smelling.
Good luck everyone!
