My cat Taz was diagnosed in January. He gets insulin twice a day with his food. He is always still hungry an will go through the trash looking for food. He has been back to the Vet once and his sugar wAs under good control. I know it is out of control again. I can tell by the amount of water he is drinking. Is there anything I can do myself to try and get it under control again without another trip to the Vet. I can't afford another $1000+ Vet bill. I also switched h from Purina canned to Friskies canned. I did this some time ago. He seemed to be fine until just the last week or so. He always seems to be hungry. I will feed him and he will rummage through the trash looking for more. Any help advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Can you give us more information so we can advise you.

1) What are you feeding him? Is it only canned food or is he also eating dry?

2) Are you home testing? How often?

3) What insulin are you using and what is the current dose? When was the last dose change and how much?

4) Is the having any other health issues? Infections or dental disease can also increase glucose levels.

I would also add the question-how old is the insulin?

Whilst I took my cat to the vets in the beginning I now home test my cats blood glucose and this has enabled me to tailor the dose quickly and also save money at the vets. It is daunting to begin with but after a week so so you feel more confident about doing it and feel much more in control of taz s treatment. Also are you checking for ketones. It would be worthwhile picking up some urine test strips from Walmart or somewhere like that.

If he has developed any kind of infection, that will increase his glucose, and thbus increase the drinking and urination.
Common possibilities are bladder, kidney, or respiratory infection.
