Hello Lantus Land!

It has been a while since I have posted an update, I have been reading updates and thinking of all you wonderful folks and kitties!

I thought I'd pop on and give an update as well as ask for some positive vines for my dear Lucy as she is having major dental work done in the morning (Wednesday)

We are almost at our 6 month OTJ annifursary (Nov 13th) and Lucy has been wonderful! Each time I would spot test her, she would give me a nice green, with the occasional low blue - just to keep me on my toes I am sure!

Lucy has gained 0.6kg since being on her wet food only diet and being regulated! She is a 'normal' cat weight now! Her obese civvie sister Ethel has lost 1.4kg  since the diet change! From a whopping 9.1kg to a nice 7.7kg! She no longer looks like a raccoon...she has a middle! Vet is thrilled with both weight changes!

Over the last couple of weeks we have come home to some surprises outside of the litter box! ugh! Of course I freaked out and thought her diabetes was back....grabbed my test kit, but nope, normal numbers! Off to the vet we go....urine and blood tests come back all clear *phew* We (the vet and I) figure it is a behaviour issue (trying to tell us she isn't feeling well) as she was urinating in the same spot she was before she was treated for the diabetes! We have known for some time that her teeth need to be removed...they have been problematic since before the diabetes, but we needed to control the diabetes first. Since the diabetes are controlled, surgery is booked for 9am tomorrow!

I'm sure she will do great, but positive thoughts would be welcomed! I will update tomorrow evening after I get home with her!

On another note, we have officially adopted my mom's droller (Molly)! Mom broke her leg in June....while hiking with Molly no less! She had to be carried more than 2km out of the conservation area they were in!! We took Molly in for 10 weeks while Mom healed, she loved it here! Huge yard, a constant companion with our drooler Logan, tolerated the cats as best as could be expected! When Mom had been cleared by the doctors, she wanted Molly back....we weren't thrilled, but obliged! Less than two weeks later, Mom calls and asks if we will take Molly back. She was finding it difficult to keep up with her and walk her safely (both Mom's and Molly's) A bit on an adjustment this time, but our fur family is back together - or as we call it the ark (we have two of each; people, dogs and cats)

Sending thoughts and healing vines to all who need them!

Val, Sugar Free Lucy & the crew (Ethel, Logan & Molly)

Sending good dental vines.

You may want to pick up some baby food if Lucy is having several extractions. It goes down easy!! Look for a brand that is just a protein and broth -- no onions, veggies, etc. Beechnut and Gerber Stage 2 are what we typically recommend.

I'd also suggest you get a pain killer. Most of us use buprenorphine. Do NOT get Metacam (meloxicam) for pain. It has an FDA black box warning for causing acute renal failure in cats. If her teeth are bad, chances are you're vet will prescribe an antibiotic. We discourage Convenia (cefovecsin sodium) since it is an injection that lasts 2 weeks. If your cat has a reaction to it, once it's in, you can't get it out.

Thanks for the baby food idea! Will stop in at lunch time to get some for her!

When they did Ethel's dental work almost 2 years ago, she was prescribed Clavamox (both before and after) Lucy is also on Clavamox currently, and I am guessing that she will be on that afterwards too.

I will inquire about the pain medications, thanks for the warning about the Metacam!

Hi! Sending good dental vines to Lucy for her procedure tomorrow. I hope it will go smoothly.

Glad to hear that Lucy is doing well and enjoying life at the Falls. I hope you can get the litterbox issue solved.

Lucy, you will love how much better you feel after you get rid of those nasty teeth. Be good tomorrow at the vetty dentist's!

Hi Val -

Congrats on 6 mo OTJ! WOW!!! One of my other fur babies had a dental last week. Tech said Clyndamycin is the Rx they use. Unfortunately it was a tablet... who does a poke-down on a baby w/ a sore mouth?

Hoping everything goes well tomorrow. Good luck.

Re: Sugar Free Lucy- Dental Update

Hello all,

Sorry for the late update, we didn't get home from the vet until later than expected and I wanted to make sure she was settled and somewhat comfortable!

Overall the dental went well, although the vet said it took longer than planned. Lucy was under anesthetic for about 90 minutes, and had 5 teeth removed. One of her teeth was worse than expected, so that is why it took so long.

Lucy is currently isolated in the spare room, much to the chagrin of the droolers who are very concerned/intrigued by what has happened and why Lucy smells like the vet's office. She is still a little wobbly when she walks, and does not like to be segregated! She is currently hiding out under the futon, she has come out to use the litter box and have a few mouthfuls of food.

Lucy was sent home with 2 does of Metacam, which I am supposed to give her tomorrow and Friday evening - I am leery of giving this due to the FDA warning though. We were also given a small amount of Buprenorphine that I am supposed to give as well as the Metacam. She will continue on the Clavamox until her prescription is finished (one more week)

I am home for the next two days so that I can make sure she is taking it easy and recovering well. She will return to the vet on Monday for a brief check up to make sure everything is healing as it should.

Thank you for all the good dental health vines that were sent our way! Lucy truly appreciates them (as do I)
Val & Lucy

If there is any possible way to take the Metacam back and swap it for more bupe, I'd urge you to do so. It is irresponsible of your vet to prescribe it for a cat. (Personally, I'd be asking if his malpractice insurance is paid up.)
