Hi all,

I've not long achieved a good test after resorting to a modification of the kitty burrito, and have you all to thank for it. I hurt her a bit but she'll get over it

Especially I thank you all because the reading was 7.0 (126).

I now have a call into the Lantus board because with a reading like that, even though I'm only new, I'm VERY reluctant to give her a shot of any size!

Why does this always happen on the bloody weekends.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not hysterical because she's eating her dinner now and has leftovers, so she'll be back for more, and she's absolutely fine, and I know it's not precisely LOW but it's damn near normal.

I'm stunned at how quickly her numbers are coming down and bless you all for helping me out today so I can deal with this safely. I know she's probably still rollercoasting but I've read reports of cats in our circumstances regulating within 10 days on Lantus so I'm very wary and thank GOD I found this place.

Will keep you posted.

Dearest Lesley, and, of course, perhaps not so sweet, Cheekyface,

YAY!!!!!!!!!! What a wondrous time to get that reading...

She's a cat.

You better...

Much love and countless smiling hugs for you and Cheekyface,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

PS: We're getting close to where I might have to explain the whole football helmet deal...

Congratulations on the successful test.

You are right, you do not want to give her a shot at that reading. For newbies we recommend not giving insulin unless the BG reading is 200 or greater. Later on when you know how she responds to each dose by doing your own curves, you may be able to lower that "don't shoot" number.

Great job!!! :RAHCAT

Hooray!
I can't speak for Lantus, my girl WAS (is?) on PZI. But sounds like we have a very similar story to tell. I was quite impressed with the speed of my success as well. My vet had me upping my dose by whole units for a few times before I found this board. By the time I got all the crucial first reads done, then went and got a meter, I was up to 9 units twice a day.
Callie Mae received that dose 1 time. Next day we started switching to the wet and I put her one 1 unit. She got insulin for 4 days, none for 2, then tiny micro doses for about 4 days. Hasn't received another dose since. That was 10 days ago!!!!!
So I know EXACTLY how you feel about finding this place. These people are angels.

Such a good feeling when you don't have to shoot kitty cuz your such a good parent, doesn't it!!

Congrats to you and good luck. Paws crossed that kitty is working towards going otj---((NO jinx, hind paws crossed with toes crossed too! ... )

:RAHCAT WOOHOO!!!! :RAHCAT

And what a pretty number to boot!

Now aren't you glad you didn't take a couple days off? And yes some cats come off Lantus very quickly with a diet change, Maxwell is a purring example of it. When his owner surrendered him to be euthanized, and DCIN stepped in to save him he was 485, the week he was with Claudia awaiting transport he stayed in the 200-300 range, then got no insulin for his flight and arrived at my house, I tested him expecting him to be sky high and got...150ish number (have to check his spreadsheet for the actual number) but in the first week I had him he only got 1u and a .5 unit and then he was done with insulin and has been in remission now for 7 months.

His success story is one of the reasons I nag newbies so hard about testing at home. If I had blindly kept giving him the 1u bid that he was started on I would have at the very least seriously hurt him, if not out right killed him. He was going into remission and we had no history together to let me catch those early warning signs of Hypo.

Hi guys I'm still here, it's just been a bit intense on the Lantus board.

Looks like I'm doing my first home curve, ye gods, talk about getting thrown in the deep end. Cheeky's poor ears.

I'm shattered. She's fine :!: @-)

Thanks for the support xoxo

Just remember practice makes purrfect >^..^<

You both will survive, however, I do recommend large amounts of Chocolate for the momma bean. :-D

Dearest Lesley, and, of course, who knows how sweet you actually are, darling Cheekyface

One word: Treats!

I remember Gizzie's first curve. It was like a mystery novel unfolding clues every two hours. It was fascinating!

Four words: Treats for you, too! Chocolate, grapes aged in oak, whatever... (Okay, that's technically ten words...)

Much love and countless encouraging hugs for you both,
Deb and Nikki (treats, cheekyface, treats!) -- and, Giz, who taught me all about TREATS!...

PS: You're about a heartbeat away from me telling you about the football helmet deal...

Is that for when I bang my head against the wall...? I'm ready now @-) ~O)

It's dawn here at last, I have two readings to go and then I can feed them, poor Bodie doesn't know what's going on. I only hope my bloody meter battery lasts out!! its warning me now...I never thought to buy a spare right off and the supermarket isn't open until 9am.

Going to make strong coffee now...xoxox

Damn, you're good, dearest Lesley!

Yes. Or, the floor. Basically any hard surface that receives a head will do...

Between dancing with Giz back then and now dancing with Nik -- and, you know my testing position -- it's generally the floor that receives my helmeted head first...

I was soooo close on the proper timing of explaining the helmet deal...

Batteries are useful. Buy two. I learned this on Valentine's Day this year when my meter's battery conked out and I was coming off of three days of flu. Shot Nikki with her full dose of 2.25 units of Levemir with no reading. Then, had misgivings... Got a new meter up and running, but somehow set it in your English, not mine. Couldn't remember the conversion (x 18...); but, knew 3.1 wasn't going to be good so posted on The Board... Someone responded 56 immediately. Called a dear friend here, absolutely hysterical... She remembered one of my neighbors (actually my landlord...) had a cat and suggested I ask if they had dry food. Ran next door in my jammies with basically three days of really bad bed hair asking for dry food. My landlords know Nikki is diabetic... I was immediately handed a little covered plastic container with dry food after I graciously declined their kind offer to come inside, as I was a skanky, flu-ridden, jammie, bed mess...

Nikki was fine although did drop to 36 in 15 minutes -- and was incredibly delighted to crunch food for the first time in almost three years! It was an incredibly long night... Her next PS was 355. I took a much-needed shower and then went to CVS and bought new batteries... It took me three days/nights to bring her PS back down in the 100s...

Buy three. They last a long time.

So, how's the curve going? How are you?

We know Cheekyface is fine because of you, dearest Lesley...

It's amazing how lovely a football helmet can look with steel-tipped sugar toe shoes... Just think of it as a sweet ensemble...

;o)

Much love and countless encouraging hugs for you and Cheekyface -- and an extra hug for Bodie, watching this all...
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, who truly taught me to find my inner brave heart...

I think it's over, +11 ~ 369

This one was rough, she's just had enough and she's hungry. I escaped being bitten again but she nicked me with a claw. I can't feed/shoot until 8.30 and I'm praying they won't ask me to stick her again beforehand, it's only 30 minutes off and surely she'll stay up now.

I'm laughing and crying at the same time reading your anecdote. You poor bugger.

I'll buy three batteries. I'll also buy 100 lancets. Thank GOD I'd already laid in 100 new test strips...

I just want to feed her and give her huge cuddles and loves, she's been such a good girl and I can't blame her for getting so ratty after the 10th poke in a row.

And then I don't want to look at this damn computer until this afternoon...

love and hugs, Lesley, Cheeky and Bodie (who's had his breakfast, I snuck him into the spare room, and is zonked in his heated bed)

Dearest Lesley, and, of course, you too, sweet Cheekyface -- and, Bodie, taking notes...

Here's the thing I want you to know the most. I wouldn't have given up a day/night dancing with Giz. I won't give up a day/night dancing with Nikki.

There is such a bond that grows between you and your sugar cat. There are really no words to describe it. It's a heart thing...

But, above all else, remember Cheeky is still your cat. She's just extra-sweet...

Extra lancets and test strips are good, too...

Much love and countless proud and encouraging hugs for you all,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

PS: Step away from the computer...
