Hello, I just found this site early this morning and what a plethora of information!!

Unfortunately I mis-calculated my online order for Tiki canned cat food, Succulent Chicken, and will need to find something similar locally. Tiki is no carb, gluten free. It is simply chicken, in broth. Our 4 year old kitty was diagnosed with border line diabetes 3 weeks ago. We switched to Tiki canned food, and slowly, just this week, weened him from Wellness Indoor (grain free) hard food. We did take him to vet each week to make sure his sugar levels were dropping. It was not until he was completely weened off of the hard food Wed. that we noticed that he no longer seemed to have the symptons relative to diabetes. I thought I had another case of Tiki, but discovered I would be out two days, before the monthly order arrived.

Does anyone have any suggestions for no carb or low carb, gluten free food that can commonly be found in grocery stores? We live in South Carolina. Thank you so much for any suggestions in advance.

Weruva Chicken Frik 'a zee is comparable quality-wise with the Tiki Cat Chicken if you're looking for something a little higher end.

Thank you all very much for your suggestions.

I can't seem to locate the "Weruva Chicken Frik 'a zee" locally, only on line? Can you tell me what store has that locally in my area?

Fancy feast and Friskies apparently have ingredients of which I'm unfamiliar?

The "Food List" doesn't even have Tiki listed, and I can't seem to find anything comparable?

Again thank you all and if you have links for the above, where I'm located, (South Carolina) please post.

Tiki is on there. Page 23. Are you looking for grocery store or pet stores? If grocery store most only carry items like fancy feast, friskies, iams, 9 lives, brands like that. If you have a local petstore, or petsmart or petco your more likely to find those but brands like avoderm, natural balance, hounds & gatos, merrick, soulistic, and some others.

Your best option may be to take a calculator with you to the store and look at a few foods and run the calculations. To calculate carbs here is the equation:

Looking at the Guaranteed Analysis on the label, add up the values for Protein, moisture, fat, fiber, and ash (if listed - (sometimes it is not). Then subtract from 100 - the difference is the wet matter carbs. So, if we have a food with 78% moisture, 11% protein, 5% fat, 2% fiber and 1.5% Ash, the calculation would look like this:

78.00 + 11.00 + 5.00 + 2.00 + 1.50 = 97.50 Subtract that from 100, and the remainder, 2.50, is the WET matter carbs.

However, when comparing the carbohydrate contents of any food, it must be done on a dry matter basis, even with dry food, as dry does contain some small amount of moisture. So, looking at the GA on the label once again, subtract the moisture content from 100 - in this case, the difference is 22. Then divide your wet matter carbs by this number. So...

2.50 divided by 22. = 11% carbs on a dry matter basis.

This is an easy formula, and once you've done it a few times, you will be able to look at the GA and pretty much know what the carb content is based on the values given. Remember, tho, that ingredients are just as important as the carb content - you want food with no grains (including rice or soy) no veggies, fruits, glutens, or cornstarch, and no gravy. Broth is fine, as long as it is not thickened with starches.

or if your phone has internet, just use this calculator:

Thank you so much for the formula to determine carbs!

JR is very sensitive to diff. foods. He is clearly lactose intolerant, has a terrible flea allergy, etc. He is only 4, and interestingly, his problems all began after being Spayed. 2 weeks later, his fur started to fall out, especially around his back legs, ears, stomach, and a line down the back of his spine. For 3 years I took him to various vets but eventually became highly frustrated. Unfortunately with the flea allergy (only 1 flea is all it takes), he developed skin infections, etc. Unfortunately as well, each of the vets would prescribe steroids (I did not know that is what it was) to curtail the scratching. Finally, I took him to one more vet, and he reported the boarder line diabetes, and was entirely concerned about the pregnisone, explaining the dangers. He did feel that he may have food allergies, and other environmental allergies in addition to the fleas. He is addressing the sugar problem first, and once he feels comfortable with that, we will proceed to rule out everything else.

Again, I am so happy to have found this truly informative, helpful and edifying web site. Thank you all so much.

If you would be so kind, would you be willing to add some data to your User Control Panel for us? If you go to the top left of your screen, click on the words "User Control Panel", then select the Profile tab, then select the Edit Profile from the left hand menu, then put your location in the Location field and submit to save. This way, your location will show on all your posts and you won't have to keep telling us.

While you are there in the User Control Panel, if you would select the Profile tab, then the Edit Signature and add some little bits of information, we would appreciate it. It helps us to help you better.

We like to see your first name, kitties name, age, sex, diagnosis date, insulin used, meter used for home testing, any complicating health conditions your cat has, food being fed and a link to your spreadsheet if you have one set up.

Sure do hope you will take a minute or 2 to add this information to help us out.
