I just saw on Tanya's crf site that you should dispose of the bag of fluids after it is opened 10 days. Mine has been opened longer and it not yet finished. Should I throw it out? What is the danger? Does anyone know?

Judy,
I didn't know that, and I am pretty sure I have kept bags longer than 10 days. And I reuse the tubing multiple times because its a pain to order.

However, I am vey very very careful not to contaminate the fluids.
I always put a fresh needle on immediately after each session.
I leave the wrapper on to assure me its a new needle.
I never touch any of the connections to any surface. (clean technique - from my wound care background)
I run fluids into the sink before and after each session to help clear any bacteria out of the line.
I do not add vit B complex or other drugs, just the lactated ringers.

I have not had trouble that I'm aware of ... no fevers, no infections, but I can definitely understand the risk. I wonder what would grow in "salt water"? But If you buy LRS by the case its only about $2+/bag so its not worth the risk to keep it too long.

FYI, in most states, if your vet provides you a prescription drug, by law, she has to write a prescription for you to fill elsewhere if you choose to fill it elsewhere. $26/12 bags at SAMS

I paid $35 at the vet for 1 bag!!! and just ordered from CVS, and they charged $30 for a bag!!! Wow. I don't know of any Sam's near me, but I do use Costco---so I will check them out. Thanks, Nancy. I have had this bag for about 3 weeks, I believe, and I am just finishing it. On Health someone said 3 weeks was OK.

That's a good idea about putting on a fresh needle after each session. I have been doing it just as I begin the session. But I was not thinking about the used needle contaminating the fluids.

I was just thinking---maybe I misunderstood at CVS and it was the price for a case? I hope!

If you look online, you can find the 1000 ml bags for well under $4-5 each, but the tube is another $4-5 I think, and the box of 100 needles is $7-8.

I get the needles locally at the same place that compounds the gabapentin, I ordered tubing online, and a case of fluids at sams. I've wanted to check costco because now I 'm a member there, as well, because its so much less for the levemir, so let me know what it costs.

for reference, check vetsupplys.com

They should be about $30 for a case - from Costco or Sam as Nancy mentioned. You need to have the vet write the Rx for quantity of 12,000ml [12, 1000 ml bags]. Online the shipping is $$$ because you are shipping water at 8+ lbs / gallon and 4 liters [1000ml] = approx 1 gallon.

IMHO more than 10 days should be OK - they just need to be stored in the dark. 1 month is the longest I ever went. The IV sets I rotate every 2 bags or one month.

Thanks, all. Can you tell me what the tubing is called? I started looking on line and I don't know the names of what I need. I am buying the LRS bags of fluids from CVS, but exactly what else do I need? If you could tell me names, or manufacturers, or anything that describes exactly what I should ask for, that would be most helpful!

They are IV sets - the trick is that they need to be 20 drops per ml or less.

The sets above a $1 and the special Terumo 21g x 1" needles are $5. The shipping is $10 unfortunately but you can buy 2 or three sets and totally make up for the shipping in the cost of those alone.

The links above are from a great place to buy from. They also have sharps containers at good prices. And the only place I know of that does not require Rx for the sets.

My last order I think we got like 20 sets and a box or two of needles and I got a bunch of their cheap forceps for my tool collection - oh and a lab coat because I've always wanted one  .

Also Mr. Jacobson's pages are great:
http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze2r6 ... ompare.htm
http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze2r6 ... /local.htm - local places to get fluids.

1) It means it is a "macro drop/drip" set.

2) It takes 20 drops in that little bell to equal 1ml. Any higher drops/ml and it will go too slow for giving fluids to a cat.

So the lower the number, the faster it flows? I have noticed 15 drop sets. Which do you find best? I am inclined to try faster ones, because it is hard to get her to stay put. But will she then feel it more?

With the 21g Terumo needles I have not noticed any difference in the total speed between 15 drop/ml and 20 drop/ml. The drops go faster in the 20drop/ml of course because they are smaller and take more drops to get the same flow rate. When I get it right it is a virtual stream and not so much drops. I've had some sessions with the 20drop/ml and the 21g Terumos that seemed to go very fast. But I have not objectively timed it to see if there was any difference.

Mr. Jacobson's page has a timed trial between various needles. I don't think he did 21g Terumo with 20 drop set vs Terumo 21g 15 drop set. So you may just have to take my word that with the 21g Terumo needles I did not notice any difference.

The lower the number the faster it flows BUT and this is a HUGE BUT it is the needle that is the real limiter of speed below 20 drop/ml.

# A fixture was made that held the needle end of a 78" long Abbott Labs' 15 drops/per mL Venoset pointing straight down into a graduated cylinder marked at 100 mL.
...
# Tests were repeated using a 10 drops per mL Baxter IV set - flow times were the same.
So that shown no difference between 10 and 15 drop/ml but not 20 and 15 drop/ml.

I think they used 15 drop/ml in that test. Shop med vet does have cheap 15 drop/ml but I think with longer tubing 100" instead of 72." My thinking on that is that I prefer the shorter because that's less cold fluid going though to tubing before the warm hits.

Some of them you have to call shopmedvet and ASK how many drops/ml they are. 800-544-7521 - they are usually very helpful. In the past I think I got 15 drop/ml B-brauns from thrivingpets in the past. It was more hassle because they require Rx and they cost a lot more - like $4 a set or something 'crazy' like that. You could always get some cheapo 15drop/ml from shopmedvet and do your own experiments with whatever needles you intend on using.

A bit of what I'm saying is per Mr. Jacobson as I had even emailed him to ask if I would notice any difference between 20 drop and 10 drop.

If you want thing to go faster then you should probably up to a larger needle or even do the butterfly set method/syringe method which you basically syringe it in and might be able to use even smaller needles??

Since I use the 21g Terumo needles exclusively I cannot say if a 15 drop/ml set would go faster with a larger needle.

You could always try to email Mr. Jacobson yourself and ask if you went with a bigger needle like a 20g Terumo or other] if he thought the difference between a 15 drop and 20 drop would make a difference.

The specialness of the UTW of the Terumo stops at 20g.

I chose and like the 21g Terumos because I view them as the best compromise between size and speed per the needle chart I linked to earlier. If you got a couple 100ml leuer lock syringes [or a few 60ml ones even] and a butterfly set, I would imagine you could probably make the process go faster for S.
