Study Finds Deadly Pathogens in Raw Cat Food Products

That's interesting, and a little bit scary too, they seem to say freeze-dry might not be safe either! Thank you for sharing.
I decided not to feed raw anymore because of the avian flu, this is adding even more to that. I think if I was going to do raw again, I would buy human meat and grind it myself. I'll probably not do it!

That’s what I was thinking too. So many of us use Freeze Dried as well, even if it’s just for treats. I have two FIV+ cats so I won’t let them have anything not cooked…. Now I am not sure if any of my cats should have freeze dried.

Interesting BUT more kibble contains pathogens than raw or gently cooked. Only 4% of cat foods found to have avian flu were raw. So what about the rest? Since there isn’t a test for it and my cats have issues I am now cooking their food. I suppose I might still give freeze dried treats. I used to buy human freeze dried chicken for Max. I can’t recall the company. It would be interesting to see how that tests. Be careful with tuna due to mercury and sodium. TJ does sell tuna sodium free.

Off topic: I love Trader Joes.
me too :-)
Tuna is just for treats while I am trying to train her to accept having her teeth brushed or to stay in her carrier. I am using Churu mostly but tuna is also highly appreciated!
I will look into cooking for her more closely. For now she eats cans of cat food (Tiki and Weruwa), and some kibble because she loves it and it's convenient... but I am weaning her, she gets less that 1/4 cup a day. And she also needs to lose some weight, she kept eating a lot but she is not nursing anymore... sorry, off topic too!

If meat is frozen for a certain amount of time, doesn't that kill any ickies that might be in it?
That's always the advice for sushi-grade fish; you should freeze it for two days, then you're good to go.
So I'm wondering if this is the same for raw cat food.

When I was giving my cats kibble, I used to keep the bag in the freezer, then take out what I was going to use a few hours before, for the same reason.

Elise, do you use the Superior Feline completer to add to your meat?

Yes. My cats both love it. Chai gets original and I cook chicken and Mocha gets liver free with bison.

Btw their website is really good and has good transitioning ideas that can work for those trying to get their cats to eat new foods or stop dry food. The owners are super helpful. I had tons of questions before buying Superior Feline. Im hoping to see better bloodwork next month.

I am going to try it with cooked beef (I guess I could try ground bison as well since it’s generally available in my local stores.). Thank you!
