Stressful week

Hi everyone,

Sorry this is really long, but I really just need to put it out there to others who might understand this.

This week has been one of those weeks where its just one thing going wrong after another. We have yet to get Misty down within a normal range despite regulating her food, and increasing her doses of insulin, except for one random morning where she was 54 which is kind of low. Our vet told us not to give insulin, and by the evening she had gone back up to the 300's. Then later in the week, due to some knots in her fur since she had stopped grooming for a while, we took her to the groomers to shave them out and they cut her skin so deep, they had to sedate her to give her stitches, which threw her numbers even more out of whack from the stress. Then due to a death in the family, we needed to fly out of state which meant she needed to be boarded, so we found a place that was willing to do her injections. We discussed it with our vet, and she agreed that we would just go back down to the 1 unit like her insulin prescription stated, so when we dropped her off today that's what I told them, and asked if they possibly could to do a spot sugar check if it wasn't a hassle and they reassured me it wasn't, and that what I had told them to do would be easy for them. However, our vet faxed over different instructions on dosing than what she had told me we would do, so they called this evening stating they couldn't care for her since they were misinformed of the level of her diabetes, and thought they just needed to do simple injections, which is what I thought was the plan since we are gone for two and half days, but now they want to move her to their hospital side of care which is already $200 more than anticipated. They basically went off about how they can't be responsible for the sugar checks, and giving shots to a cat who has varying numbers, and told me all this scary stuff about cat's they've given shots too who and it ended up being a crisis situation, and were just seeming to be so unwilling to work with me, or allow my vet to talk to them. At this point I'm just feeling really frustrated with a lot of the interactions I've had with people who are suppose to help provide care for her, and really starting to wonder if this gets easier?

I feel like I've put this cat through so much this week, and I want what's best for her, but I also am frustrated with the vet and wondering if I need one who specializes more in diabetes, and that this is now becoming a bigger issue than anticipated at diagnosis, and being a big source of worry for me.

I don't really have any helpful advice for you but I can definitely empathize with your stress and understand your frustration. Did you ask your vet why she sent different instructions to the boarding facility that what you and she discussed? It's a shame the boarding facility isn't more willing to work with you, but I guess they are covering their own butts so they don't get sued or something.

:bighug::bighug: It definitely does get easier. It would help us to help you if you set up a spreadsheet (instructions are in the tech forum) for Misty so we can see what her BG is doing. Many of us just use our vet for a prescription as far as the diabetes is concerned. There are people here that are much more knowledgeable about feline diabetes than vets are that can help with dosing if they can see her numbers. If you're happy with your vet in all other respects there is no need to change.

I am so sorry for such a difficult week--
I am a groomer and I feel like I want to apologize for the cut too--stress is very real and I hope you can take some time to regroup... it will all settle down and you can do a restart. many thoughts coming your way.:bighug::bighug:

Thank you everyone for your replies, just putting this out there really helped me calm down a bit. It's hard getting used to this diagnosis and the changes, and even more when life wants to throw more your way. I will try to get a spreadsheet set up here within the next few days, when I'm done playing catch up with all the school I've missed this week, and had some time to cuddle with Misty after her's and mines week!
