Well, I'm sorry and confused to report that Jones' pre-shot number tonight was 452 (and 479 on the Prime, so I know it wasn't just a false read). He's just had his normal dose, and a can of WD, and I'll keep up the tests. The last test I did was 4 hours ago, and it was 227.
Is this normal during a food transition? Just this afternoon was his lowest reading ever, and now it's his highest!

It can happen, especially while they are just getting use to the insulin. Did anything change? I looked at the previous thread you had linked. Could you give us some more info like what insulin, how much and what you are feeding (give brand names ) thx. Don't panic. Our motto here is:
Better too high for a day than too low for a moment. This will all get sorted out.

Thank you - vet said she wasn't too worried yet either. Been on insulin since Feb., 1.5u Lantus, and this morning I made the switch from a diet of 1/2 dry (Purina DM, 1/4 cup), and half wet (Hill's WD, 1/3 can), to all wet (WD, 1 full can).
Here's his whole story:

It's just so frustrating - this afternoon I thought our worries were over, and now he's higher than before! I know it will even out, but it's scary.

Don't panic, breathe. This is the sugar dance that we all go through, really high, medium low, low and all over again. Our kitties are trying to adjust to the new foods and insulin and it takes time. You are doing a good job keeping him safe and that is all that matters. Keep us posted, we are here to help you. :bighug:

If you want to use prescription food, Purina DM canned (not dry) is a better choice than WD. However, as others have said, it's no better than store bought brands, but it's more expensive. Many here feed fancy feast classic pate or friskys pate. Wellness grain free pate is another choice.

My cat's BG dropped a lot when I took him off prescription food.

We have all been thorough this roller coaster of low numbers and then BAM, highest number. It is the bouncing. Polish up your dancing shoes because this sugar dance is something else. Sue and Oliver said it best: We are dancing with our sugar cats and they are leading and only they can hear the music ( I am paraphrasing) But, you get the drift?

Hi Billysmom - The plan is definitely to get him off the "prescription" food, I just wanted to take it slow and start by dropping the dry. I'm still trying to decide what to switch him to though - I think I can get the Wellness wholesale through my work, so maybe I'll look into that one.

Make sure the Wellness is NO GRAIN, it has a yellow triangle on the label. I use some Wellness too.

After I posted I saw in your other thread that you were planning on taking him off wd. Sorry 'bout that. Maybe buy a few small cans of different flavors and see if he likes them. You know cats...

No prob! I'm getting that about the site - you can't assume that people have read all your other stuff!
Jones actually seems more normal and alert to me now than he did this afternoon. I hated to admit it - I wanted to see him doing backflips in the 200's, but he seemed a little out of sorts to me. Poor guy - I hate that he was used to being so sick.
How often should I test him tomorrow? Is every 2 hours necessary? I feel so lucky that I'm only working part time right now. I'm only gone 6 hours a day M-Th. That may change soon though, so I really hope to get this at least to where I feel okay leaving him all day before then.

No, you don't have to test every 2 hours

You ALWAYS test before shooting to make sure they're high enough to give insulin at all....then during the AM cycle, you want to at least get 1 test in somewhere around +5 to +7 (of course if you want to get more tests, you can!) Then on the PM cycle you want to get at least a "before bed" test so you know if it's safe to go to sleep or if you should set an alarm clock to get up later

A lot of cats act a little "off" when they first start getting into "better" numbers....they've gotten used to living at those higher numbers so they feel "off" ......as their body re-learns that it's OK to be in those better numbers, he'll perk up!

I would say if you could get pre-shots DEFINETLEY, and what ever else your schedule permits. I know what mean about being able to be around more, me too.

we're at 352 now, so I feel safe going to bed! The information about the bounce effect makes me feel so much better. It makes sense. Even though the vet said not to worry about a spike, I need to know the REASON for the spike not to worry! I'll wait until the bounce is over, and then work in a new food very gradually to try and avoid this happening again.
Thanks to everyone who chimed in - you folks are AMAZING!

Did you shoot tonight? You don't have any entries in the U column after PMPS at all

It's very important to get that "before bed" test in every PM cycle too.....if the +2 number is lower than the PS, that can be your "early warning" that he might be going a lot lower at night and it's important to get another test in later on

I can sympathize with you, I make myself crazy trying to figure out "WHY?" when Squallie has a spike in BG! :banghead:
