I really don't know what's happening with Rocky.
Maybe some of you know answers to these questions:
does BG go up when there is an infection or any other health problem in non-diabetic cats or this is specifically a common problem in diabetics (eg. my own BG stays within the same range of 4 - 4.7 (72 - 84) regardless of whats happening with my health)?
Rocky seems well regulated but I'm not sure that others see the same with regulation: it seems that Rocky has good BGs for few days, then all of a sudden he has higher numbers and this seem to be like a cycle repeating every so often. I feel that he should really go into remission (if you look at his SS he has been in blue numbers for a very long time) but something is bothering him. He has had UTI for some time now, coming back. He was treated recently, tested again after the course of antibiotics (no trace of infection or bacteria) and his BG is raising today.
My vet doesn't seem to be at all concerned, says everything is normal (USG 0.015!).
I wouldn't really try to solve this puzzle if Rocky did not show any symptoms, I wouldn't probably worry at all but I just see that he is not right and it is difficult to just wait and see how things would progress.
I would ask you to have a look at his SS and see if you think that it is not right. I went through brain storming (if I still have a brain!) to try to figure out what's up. I was thinking maybe I can see a bounce but I don't know if a cat which is very used to insulin can bounce on very small doses.
I'm sorry if my post is a bit chaotic but I'm just so confused.
Would appreciate any comments.
@Elizabeth and Bertie @Marje and Gracie and others.
Many thanks

(((Marlena))),

I'm sorry to hear that Rocky is a bit below par. Is there any chance that this could partly be due to the heat in the UK? All of my lot are suffering a bit...

You have amazing control of Rocky's numbers. And these are AT numbers, so would be even lower on a human meter... But I absolutely understand your frustration that Rocky won't take that extra step into remission. (Bertie has gone up to 14 days with no insulin but still won't take that leap...)

I'm not seeing any 'bounce' in Rocky's numbers, just a fluctuation; and there could be many reasons for that, some of which we may never know...

Has Rocky had general blood tests done lately? And if so were they OK apart from this UTI?

Eliz

Sorry to hear you sounding worried, Marlena... maybe these numbers are just a case of Rocky being Rocky, ie ECID. Of course diabetic cats' BGs can and do fluctuate a lot and this could be down to all sorts of reasons, some very simple and not connected with any major health issue at all.
Maybe his being not right is due to the heat, as Eliz suggests, or maybe he is just getting a wee bit older and less active generally?
I'm sure you're doing the very best you can and will keep a close eye and report any specific problems to the vet.

Thank you girls!
Rocky had a blood test in May:

UREA 12.2 (5.7- 12.9)
CREA 133 (71-212)
BUN/CREA 23
PHOS 1.41 (1 - 2.42)
CA 2.13 (1.95 - 2.83)
Na 159 (150 - 165)
Na/K 42
Cl 117 (112 - 129)

USG 1.22
no protein, no blood in urine

So today Rocky is drinking HUGE amount of water (never saw him drinking that much!). He vomited his night/early morning meal. But his appetite is very good.
Morning BG is 8.8. Unfortunately I'm using Freestyle lite test strips in AlphaTrak meter so the numbers are ever so slightly lower, more similar to human glucometer or maybe more in between so his number on AlphaTrak would likely be about 10.6.
I can't catch Rocky urinating but I will "stalk" him as I need to test his urine at home (ordered some good urine pH testing strips).
Wish me luck.
I tend to worry because if something doesn't feel right to me I want to fix it as if things get bad I feel that I should have prevented that, specially if something could be easily stopped rather than waiting for a problem to fully manifest itself as needing serious medical intervention. But of course I realise that sometimes this is what you have to do as it is not so clear what the problem is. UTIs are really difficult because often testing is not giving clues and does not show a bacterial infection which is present. We shall see.

I hope that you are doing well and enjoying summer.
Sending love,
Marlena and Rocky

Marlena, so sorry to hear Rocky is having problems. :bighug::cat:

How long after he finished his antibiotics was his last UTI test done? My vet won't test for a minimum of two weeks after ABs are finished, to make sure he is getting an accurate result.

It was almost two weeks.
I've just realised that Rocky seems to have reoccuring UTIs and only once he tested positive for bacteria but negative test doesn't exclude bacterial infection. Last test did not show any evidence of inflammation or infection.
