I just came back from a trip and my friend was giving my sugar kitty her shots. She missed a shot on Friday night because my friend lost her keys to my apartment, but she received her next shot about 26 hours after the last dose. She has gotten every shot on time since then. (She is on Levemir)

I just caught her squatting over my clothes with her tail up as if she were trying to defecate, and when i smelled my shirt, she had urinated on it a small amount. I moved her and she went and hid under a chair, then she went over to the shirt and smelled it, jumped up on a chair, and assumed the same stance. I tried to put her by the litter box and she just looked at me and then went to hide under the bed. I'm sorry, I have no idea what her sugars are looking like, I haven't tested her in a long time because she has been fairly stable. Any idea what the problem could be??

Edit: I just checked where she jumped up on the chair, and I saw some slime there along with a damp spot where she sprayed. Not wet.

my first thought is possibly an anal gland problem. or possibly constipation. she may have peed a little due to straining and the slime would be from the glands i believe.

any chance you can call the vet and tell them what's going on to see if they should see her quickly?

I would say it is behavioural since you said "I just came back from a trip and my friend was giving my sugar kitty her shots." The cat is either pissed off that you were gone of did not like the pet sitter.

I'm totally broke right now, I don't think there's any way I can go to the vet.

She may be constipated but she hasn't gone to the bathroom outside her litterbox since she was a tiny kitten. She never really gets upset at me when I leave. I go out of town for a couple days at a time on a fairly regular basis. She cuddled with me last night and when she's mad at me she does not do that.

She just jumped back up on the same chair and did the same thing. I put some paper under her and she urinated a very small amount on it after 30 seconds or so and then attempted to cover it.

Slime suggests something else may be going on - perhaps a bladder infection or cystitis?

Also the frequent attempts to urinate suggest a problem.

Maybe test and check.

That might be a UTI. Does she cry or seem to have any level of discomfort when she tries to pee?

My suggestion is to check the litter box... are there normal sized urine clumps? In the places where she squats, are there any traces of blood?

There is no way to know for sure unless you get her to a vet. If it doesn't stop by tonight, I strongly suggest that you get her medical attention.

It would also be wise to get a bg reading on her. If her numbers are elevated, it may be an indication of an infection.

Hi Sarah --- just checking in. How is Baby doing? Is she still squatting? Have you noticed any changes in her behavior? Mood? Appetite? Litter box?

Hi Sarah,

I have had several cats that have had urinary problems, both male and female. Your girl sounds like she could possibly have Interstitial Cystitis or Idiopathic Cystitis. It may not or it may, be something to do with a UTI, but no matter what is causing her distress, I would get her checked out ASAP.

The vet will be able to feel her bladder, and test her urine, and also ask her for some Buprenex if it turns out to be cystitis. That is VERY painful in cats. If your girl is not peeing much, she could even have a partial blockage from a bladder stone or crystal. I have learned to never wait or fool around with guessing at what a problem like this could be. I don't think it is behavioral, or she would always have been doing this other times when you went away.

Is she drinking enough water? You could add some water to her wet food too, which might help. Are you feeding her a wet food diet only?

Maybe your vet will let you make small payments. It should not cost too much to get her checked out. I have been through this too many times with my different cats, and when they are in pain, the best thing for them, is usually the Buprenex and making sure they have plenty of fresh water.

Keep us posted.
Best wishes,
Jean and Charcoal (GA)
