The last 2 times I pricked Jackie's ear, the bleeding didn't stop with simply applying pressure. Any suggestions about what to do when this happens?

Are you hitting the vein rather than the little capillaries that go off it toward the edge of the ear? Sometimes the vein can mean extra blood.

You can buy styptic pen or powder at most pharmacies or pet stores for the bleeding. As others said, try to poke to the side of the vein, not right on it. Also, how excessive is excessive? If it's really quite a bit of blood, I'd get some labs done, particularly platelet count and liver values.

Apply direct pressure for several minutes. You may have hit the vein or perhaps a small artery.
Firm pressure aids clotting and reduces bruising.
