Stinky-headed towards OTJ?

I don't want to jinx anything, but Stinky hasn't had a shot for 6 days!! I know his #'s are good, but ideally, don't I want them to be just a *little* bit lower? I'm feeding primarily Sophistacat & some Friskies, and trying to keep the carbs at/under 6%. The only treats he gets are freeze-dried chicken & generally only at pokey-time.
 
He looks great! I would be sure to support him with smaller frequent meals of the lowest carb food (but not fish all the time). As long as he stays in the 100s and brings himself down after eating (have you sure tested for this?) I would give it time.

It is nerve wracking to even consider giving minute doses under 150. If he sneaks up into the 150 range, you could give him a drop (if you are sure he is headed up, not down) but you want to be sure you will be around to test and intervene if necessary.
 
Those are wonderful numbers - good work Stinky's pancreas! It looks like your kitty and my kitty could be in the same therapy space! Isn't it so darned exciting?

I have to agree with Sue - it's the same advice she gave me for BooBoo, and it's good, sound, and most importantly, safe and prudent advice. They're doing great, and some would considered them OTJ, but I'm still nervous seeing some of those numbers. Adjust the food a lttle more and test test test. BooBoo is more than two weeks without insulin, but we're not quite ready to have his OTJ party. Those small tweaks in diet *could* make all the difference between "no insulin, but it should be a little better," and "Party Time!"

Can you try a food with even lower carbs content? And something else that I've been pondering the past couple days is carb source. I'm starting to think that any corn in a Boo's diet is not going to work for him - there could be some kind of sensitivity (not an allergy or anything, just that some ingredients might be harder for him to process). Brown rice and potato filler seems to increase Boo's BG less than corn but I've only tried a couple of new foods over the past three days so it could just be wishful thinking on our part.
 
Corn =carbs.
we had a kitty here this summer whose numbers went up for no good reason. Momma found out the it was due to his finding a new "snackfood". Ever heard of "World's Best" cat litter? It is made out of corn. Kitty was eating it!

Also, it could be just a sensitivity to "corn". Some foods contain it, but it isn't universally "bad". I mean, even a 3% carb food has carbs. They have to come from something in the recipe, right?
 
I avoid anything w/corn, wheat, or oats, if I can help it. My civvie, Mo, kept licking all of the fur off her belly & hind legs, and pooping outside the litterbox & in my desperate googling to find out why (after confusing, unhelpful vet visits), I stumbled upon Dr. Lisa's page about cat litter. We had been using World's Best Cat Litter & my poor baby was likely allergic to it! Anyway, I didn't see any corn, oats, wheat, or anything-gluten listed in the ingredients on any of the cans I bought. A few of them do have rice listed, but not in the 1st 5 ingredients. I'd like to be able to get him better quality food, but I live in a smallish town in semi-rural KY, and my options are limited unless I order online. We finally got a PetSmart in the next town over earlier this year, but it's about 1/4 of the size of a regular PetSmart.

Stinky does get 4 small meals/day. It wouldn't be difficult to adjust it so that his food is 4% carbs or less. If he's over 200, he gets .4, if he's 150-199, he gets .2. FYI: I'm using u100 syringes w/the conversion chart, so on those it's 1 unit or .5. I haven't adjusted the insulin any further b/c he reacts really well to it & I don't want to drop him like a rock. Think I need to make any changes there?
 
Haha, I *did* jinx myself...PMPS was 166, so I had to give him a shot. Oh well, we'll tweak the diet a little bit more, as previously mentioned & see what we can do.
