Stinky 10/14

I know there aren't many people on this board during the day, but I'd appreciate it if someone would take a look at Stinky's ss, hold my hand & reassure me that I'm doing this the right way. After all the excitement the other night, we decided that if his BG was 200 or above yesterday morning at +24, I'd shoot .4, but he didn't get any shots yesterday. Last night at dinner, he ate about 1/2 his dinner then headed for my bedroom to curl up under the bed, so I took his bowl in the bedroom. I figured maybe the kitchen was a little too noisy at that point...he ate about 1/2 of what was left. At the nighttime feeding, I doubt he even ate 1/2. At breakfast this morning, he maybe ate 3/4. Since his AMPS was under 200 (171) at +48, I didn't give him a shot. However, I checked him before lunch & he was 249. I'm thinking this is probably due to the finicky eating at the last several meals not being enough to stimulate the pancreas? He ate all of his lunch at once, rather than coming back to it later as he usually does. I'm wondering if I need to leave it at "Don't shoot under 200" or adjust to something below that...the question then becomes, what? I plan to check his BG again once it has been about an hour after eating & will go from there.

1 hour after eating, his BG is 272. If I were to stick to the 12-hr schedule, he wouldn't be due for a shot for another 4.5 hrs. I'm here all afternoon, so I can keep checking him, or I can give him a dose-whichever would be better.

Hard to figure. We don't want to throw off your 12/12 schedule, but it may be that he just needs a booster and will surf for awhile and throw it off anyway. And it would be best if you were around since we can't be sure what his numbers will do. I don't like waiting 4 hours as it is likely to rise.... One unit at 220 the other day set off his surf in greens. What do you think about a fat .5? (That means just a drop more than a .5) I don't think I would feel good about .75 or one unit - that seems too much.

What do you think?

Just so I'm clear on the amount, since ProZinc is a u40 insulin, and I'm using u100 syringes (I already had them & printed out the conversion chart), Lori had suggested .4 (which equals 1.0) on my syringes. Do you think I should increase that slightly?

I am okay with .4 I think she was thinking over 200. He is 272, but some of that could be food influenced. Let's play it safe and go with .4 (If it's not quite enough, we will have the data to shoot a little more next time he is in the high 200s) I would test him again, after the insulin, about +3 or +4 to see how he is doing.

Yes, with the conversion, it's the one unit line on the U100 syringe.

I can't see him dropping fast, but you have the hypo instructions and some gravy food, right? Besides that very first day, this is the scariest part of the dance: working with small doses and a working pancreas. You are doing great and so is he.

I gave him a fat .4 & will be sure to check him again this afternoon. I have everything for hypo except gravy food, but will have Hubs pick some up on his way home from DD's dance class. I do have some higher carb food & treats though. Thanks so much for the help!

Alyssa,
I think you can start refining your dosing.
The morning 170 or so was deserving of a small shot as you can clearly see he was steadily on his way up. No need to wait when you see that pattern.
Ideally if you catch those on the rise numbers with small doses you may keep him in the greens kind of permanently.
By small dose I mean you could have tried .2 on the 170 morning.
If it's not enuf you will learn pretty quickly.
Lori
