Day 3 and I have already poked myself with the syringe. Bally did very well this morning but when I was sitting on the bed petting her after giving her the injection, I went to recap the syringe. Bally saw a bird land on the window ledge and jumped to it, knocking the syringe out of my hand. Landed poky-side down (of course) and pricked the inside of my calf. Now I know why the cats barely react to it because I doubt I would have felt it if I didn't know it was there. Drew a teeny tiny bit of blood so I disinfected and Neosporined the site. Well, the vet said I'd probably jab myself at some point. This just wasn't the scenario I had pictured! :lol:
 
^^ This gave me a bit of a chuckle. I've been lucky and haven't poked myself yet, but I know it will happen some time. At least you've already gotten it out of the way! :-D
 
LOL yep I think there are two types of diabetic cat caregivers...those that have jabbed themselves with either the syringe, lancet or both...and those that are about to.. :lol: Been there done that, got chocolate for it...(gave myself the insulin when I went all the way through Musette's scruff and into my own thumb the first night I adopted her). :roll:

Are you using a sharps container for your used syringes? If so you do not need to recap the syringe, in fact doing so takes up more space and means you fit less syringes in there.

I think there are many people who dispose of syringes differently, but I've always kept a large sharps container since I usually have a few on insulin at a time. They are very cheap at Calvetsupply and I get my tuna flakes there that my Lilly Grace loves :)
 
yep - apply chocolate as needed :D

I use a needle clipper to cut off the needle (which is kept in the cutting device) and then the rest of the syringe can go in the trash.
 
I don't have a sharps container yet -- just another great suggestion I have received in a short time on this website. Thanks! Fortunately, I do have a supply of chocolate to make my boo boo feel all better.
 
Ouch! But, been there, done that! Check with your local fire department.......here in our county, in FL, I got a free sharps container.....and when it is full, I take it back to the fire department and they exchange it for a fresh one.

Different localities have different rules for disposal of used syringes. If you go to your localities website you should be able to find out how to dispose of them. Look in the trash disposal section.
My county says:
Sharp medical waste (such as needles) should be placed in a rigid plastic container with a screw cap and disposed of with your regular trash.
My county incinerates the trash in co-generation plant.
 
:lol: Ok...Sherry, I thought I was the only one too!! My experience was simular to yours, only Casey decided the syringe was a toy while I was in the process of re-capping it. I just about to have it capped when...swat...the syringe was launched up and landed needle down on the side of my thigh. (I was relieved it landed on me, I was terrified that it would land on Casey as she was watching it flip in the air...

I actually went and asked a pharmacist (at Walgreens) what I need to do to dispose of my syringes. He told me that as long as I have them in a hard plasic container and double plasic-bag it, I could just bring it there and they would take care of the disposal. I know that different states have different laws/rules, but maybe a pharmacy near you would provide a simular service.
