I use dehydrated chicken as well as Stella & Chewies freeze dried (both dog & cat types) as a treat for all of my kitties. Fish flakes also make them go crazy. I thought the freeze dried food, used as treats is fine for a diabetic kitty. Just wanted to see what you all thought. Also, I am using Nulo 3oz cans in the morning. The carb %age according to Dr. Pierson is "9". The food is chopped and not pate, so it has a bit of a glaze to it. We should aim for under 10% carbs, but is 9 still too high? My kitty is a newer diabetic and we are having trouble getting him regulated. We just increased his Lantus to 1.25 units BID, His other foods throughout the day are around 5% carbs. Not sure about the treats. SInce they are pure meat, I thought the carbs would be low. Thank you for your thoughts.

Sometimes it depends on your individual cat and how they respond to certain foods, but Dr. Pierson’s recommendation is simply that the food be under 10% carbs. From her food chart:

“I often see diabetic cat caregivers taking this value far too literally...assuming that 6% vs 9% is statistically significant when it is not...... The carb values noted on this chart are probably higher (overestimating) than they actually are. Even a value of 10% carbs could actually be closer to 0% carbs. Therefore, stick with the directive to stay below 10% carbohydrates but do NOT get caught up in whether a diet says 10%...or 5%....or 0% because these numbers are just not that accurate”

The freeze dried treats are low carb, I’m not completely sure about the Stella and Chewys though
